Short Tandem Repeats
By Nigel & Josh
😳 WHAT ARE STR's?
STR stands for Short Tandem Repeats. This is a method where a region of a DNA Molecule contains short segments consisting of 3-7 repeating bases.
😒 IS IT DIFFICULT OR EASY
It is easy because the number of repeats can be highly variable among individuals, which will make it effective for human indentification purposes.
WHAT MAKES IT A GOOD CHOICE FOR USE IN A SPECIFIC AREA?
It is the most successful and widely used DNA profiling procedure. Also, they are less susceptible to degradation and can be recovered from bodies or stains that have been subjected to extreme decomposition.
STR OR PCR ❓❓❓
STR's are shorter than PCR's which makes it easier to work with!
