Bednarcik Bulldog Blast
August 4, 2022
Notes from Principal.......
We look forward to welcoming all our 6th grade students for Survival Skills next week!
The 2022-2023 school year will be great! As we help students prepare for their future, we will bring back so much of what was not able to take place over the past few years. We will gather as an entire school for assemblies! We will re-open our Bednarcik School Store - new and improved! We will be able to sit (8) to a table during lunch with 6th graders having lunch 6th period and 7th/8th graders being split between 5th and 7th period lunch.
We have 530 students at Bednarcik as we begin the 2022-2023 school year - the lowest enrollment we have had in over 15 years. There are many positives to being a small junior high. There are also some challenges that come along with being so small - opportunities to be involved being at the top of the list! Schedules will be made public @ 4:00 PM on Wednesday, August 10. Every year we do our best to make individual wants/needs work within the master schedule. Core academic classes take priority and we always ensure student 'needs' are taken care of and work as best as we can to get all students what they 'want'. Electives are not offered every period in every grade level and we worked hard to get as many students their top choices in electives. In some cases, students will be in electives they did not choose. Please know that junior high is a great time for kids to try new things and see what they like - and what they don't like.
School Store - Gift Cards Needed
If you are moved to do so, please think about purchasing $5 gift cards to local businesses (McDonalds, 7-11, CVS, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, or other businesses you can think of that kids love). Any gift cards purchased can be brought to the office - ATTN Erica Deren.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Health Requirements for the 2022/2023 School Year
The Illinois School Code has specific immunization and examinations that are required to attend school, these must be provided at the following times: Pre-K/EC, Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 6th grade, 9th grade,12th grade and upon first entry to an Illinois school (see link below for requirements by grade level).
Failure to provide documentation of the physical and vaccine requirements will result in first-day exclusion from school. Documentation of future medical appointments will not be accepted.
All health forms and medical documentation can be brought to the main office at the building your student will be attending during regular office hours.
Please contact your building nurse with any questions or concerns.
ENGAGING STUDENTS - Policy on cell phones & personal gaming systems
Bednarcik is continuing with our building cell phone and electronic device usage expectations for students. Students will be able to access and use their phone once they advocate for their need to a staff member. When students do this, staff will work with the kids to determine the best time to use their phone. This could be used for texting parents and other communication needs.
To help with this, we ask that parents and families do what they can to avoid texting students throughout the day. This provides constant distractions for kids and takes their attention away from the learning taking place throughout the day.
All students will have Chromebooks with them throughout their day and email would be a great form of communication if/when needed.
This doesn’t mean that students are not allowed to bring their phones to school. The expressed language in the student handbook states that students are to have their cellphones turned off and out of sight during these times except as approved by building administration, which is the same expectation from the 2022-23 school year. This will continue, and include the lunchroom as an area that students will need the permission to use their cell phones.
If you have questions, please reach out to Bednarcik Administration. Our number is 630-636-2500.
"NEW" E-HALL Pass
e-hallpass (EHP) is an online system that is used to manage all pass situations. e-hallpass replaces old fashioned methods of requesting a hall pass. The system utilizes current browser technology and is easy to use. Students log into the system and make a request for a new pass by selecting where they are departing from and indicating their destination.

Food Service
The federal program providing free breakfast and lunches to all students during COVID-19 has expired and meals are no longer free for all students. However, for families that qualify, free or reduced meals are available with an approved application.
Free/Reduced Lunch
Those who qualify for free or reduced cost meals must complete an application. The deadline to apply is October 1. Information and the application can be found here. This is the same program that was in place prior to COVID-19.
Meal Costs
Students who are not using the free/reduced meal program will have the option to purchase a complete meal, just a beverage, or ala carte options from the cafeteria at Breakfast and/or Lunch. Junior High and High School students should have their student ID with them in line during lunch, so applicable charges can be deducted from their balance. Elementary cafeteria staff will assist those students with charges.
Adding funds
Parents/guardians can add money to a student meal account eaily using the PushCoin online system; there is no transaction fee for doing so. Alternatively, a check can be sent to the school and the funds will be added to the student account.
Meal Choices
Supply chain challenges have decreased, so we anticipate that planned meals and food offerings will be more readily available, with less substitutions. Ala carte options are returning as they were prior to the pandemic- offerings vary by grade level. More information about offerings can be found on the Food Service page of our website.
Breakfast
Breakfast is available before school at all locations. It is open to all, including those with free/reduced lunch, and those charging their PushCoin account. Snack items can be chosen during the breakfast service and saved for a designated snack time or for after school. Options vary by school and building level.
