Back to School at LCE!

2022-23 School Year

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying the last days of summer. I've missed seeing students every day and look forward to August 15th. In this newsletter, you will find information for the upcoming school year. Our Parent-Student Handbook is in the Aeries Portal, but I'm attaching it below to be sure you have access to it. Please take time to read through it in the upcoming days. Use our campus map to help find your child's classroom and navigate the campus. I look forward to meeting you or seeing you again as we start the 2022-23 school year. Our first day of school is Monday, August 15.

I've also included some photos to help you understand a bit of the history behind La Cañada Elementary, a place of which our community is extremely proud! There's a lot to go through in this newsletter, so find a comfy spot and read at your leisure. Reach out to me if you have questions.

This was the second schoolhouse in La Cañada (the first one was built in 1885 and destroyed by fire in 1892). It was located where Memorial Park is now. The bell in the tower is now displayed in front of La Cañada Elementary School.

First Day of School: Monday, August 15

Big picture
This is the original school bell! The original clapper for the bell is mounted in the front office.
On the first day of school, many families either walk to school or park somewhere near and walk in. Families can walk their students to the line-up area unless you've heard from the classroom teacher about walking directly to the classroom. TK and Kindergarten families will receive information from their teachers for the first day of school protocols. Arrive early (but not too early) for the best photo opportunities!

Once the students have started their first day of school and parents have a chance to dry their eyes, I hope all parents will stay for the first PTA meeting of the school year. There will be many opportunities to sign up as a volunteer. Sign-ups will be in the cafeteria, and refreshments will be provided. The meeting will take place in the covered outdoor lunch pavilion.

Staffing Update

Big picture
Helen Haskell was the first teacher in 1885, and she and 18 students met in a room at the Haskell ranch on what is now Angeles Crest Highway. 5th-grade teacher Jenny Franz helped me locate this photo of Ms. Haskell. It used to hang near the cafeteria here at LCE until about 10 years ago when it was relocated to the Lanterman. It can now be found at the La Crescenta Women's Club.

Here is our teaching staff in 2019, 50 years after the previous staff photo. This photo was taken after our new play structure was installed on the playground. We were all excited to try it out!

Health and Safety Protocols

Big picture

The Department of Public Health dictates requirements for schools. At this time, masks are not mandatory.

A negative COVID test is required for the first day of school, and test kits will be available on August 10 for pick up if families wish to come to LCE to get a kit. Families can also use their own test kits, and all families must complete the attestation form in the email that will be sent out during the weekend before school starts.

In the interest of promoting and maintaining student and staff health, LCUSD will require COVID testing and self-attestation on the following dates: Sunday, August 14th, and again on Monday, September 5th.

Families may choose to use their own rapid antigen test kit or use one provided by LCUSD. Families may pick up the antigen tests at their individual child’s home school. For example, if you have one child at the 7/8 and one child at LCE, you will need to go to both schools to pick up a test kit for each child. Only one test kit per student will be distributed.

A 2-pack iHealth COVID antigen test will be distributed to families as follows:

PCR Drive-through: 5025 Palm Drive, La Canada, CA 91011

Wednesday, August 10th - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

LCE Drive-through: 4540 Encinas Drive, La Canada, CA 91011

Wednesday, August 10th - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

PCY Drive-through: 471 Knight Way, La Canada, CA 91011

Wednesday, August 10th - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

LCHS 7/8 Drive-through: 4463 Oak Grove Drive, La Canada, CA 91011

Wednesday, August 10th - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

LCHS 9-12 students: 4463 Oak Grove Drive, La Canada, CA 91011

Students will be receiving the 2-pack iHealth COVID antigen test Monday, August 8th & Tuesday, August 9th - during student registration.

Families will receive an attestation form through Parent Square on Sunday, August 14th, and again Monday, September 5th. If your child’s antigen test comes back positive, families should complete the LCUSD attestation as well as email the site Health Clerk, the Principal, and Nurse Katrina Metz (email addresses included below). Please keep your child home if he/she tests positive for COVID or has COVID symptoms. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to keep our schools and community safe.

Student Drop Off, Pick Up, and Carline

Big picture
This is the front of LCE in 1969, what you would see if you were in the carline on Encinas. The bell wasn't in place yet, and there were large trees planted down the center hallway. Today, there are large, decorative circles on the walkway to show where those trees once stood.
LCE has a carline in the front (Encinas Dr.) and one in the back (La Cañada Blvd.) of campus. If you are using the carline, please read our carline procedures. Students entering campus, via walking or from the carline, can go to their line-up area on the playground (TK has a different entry procedure) starting at 7:50 a.m. Teachers will come to lead their groups to class at the start of the school day. Please note that students are not allowed on campus before 7:50 a.m. unless they are enrolled in CEC and escorted by a parent/guardian.

Please be timely with your pick-up at the end of your child's school day. If you are late, please make arrangements with friends or family for student pick-up. If you need on-site childcare, please contact CEC ( if you need before or after-school care. It is important to go over the gate location you plan to use with your child(ren). When picking up students, please wait in the carline. If you are walking with your child, please remain outside the gates.

Be aware that there will be additional Sheriffs patrolling at the opening of school. This is for safety and security reasons, but also to enforce traffic and parking ordinances. Tickets will be given for parking, speeding, and stopping violations.

Would you like to share your thoughts or concerns about traffic, parking, and/or safety with our City representatives? If so, please come to the Town Hall Meeting which will take place in the LCE Cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11th.

Family Name Placards

Please use this template to make a placard for your car if you plan to use the carline. It makes our carlines run so much smoother! Be patient. There may be a slight delay when you select "Make a Copy". Have this placard prominently displayed in the passenger window or the front dash of your vehicle.

Students walking home independently may leave campus through the gates and head for their destination immediately. Students may not cut through the staff parking lot to access Memorial Park.

Student Registration and Class Assignments

Big picture
Please make sure to visit the Aeries Parent Portal for data confirmation and registration if you have not done so already. You will need to print your student's Emergency Form and have your student bring it on the first day of school. 1st - 6th-grade parents will be able to check for their students' teacher assignments on Thursday, August 11th, after 5:00 PM in the Aeries Parent Portal. TK and Kindergarten AM and PM class assignments were shared via email on Tuesday, Aug. 2, in order for those families to arrange for childcare.
