Notes from Dr. Sullivan
We are starting the 2022-2023 school year with just over 500 students enrolled. Most of our families were able to attend our open house earlier this week and meet their child's teacher. Students had a great first three days.
On Thursday we practiced our safety drills. A district-provided flyer is going home with all students today explaining to parents our Standard Response Protocol. If we ever have to evacuate the school for some reason (gas leak, etc..) we will walk to Anderson Middle School.
Absent Students
When your child is going to be gone for any reason we need you to call the school office. We have an answering machine so the call can be made at any time day or night. If we haven't heard from you and your child is absent we will need to call you to verify why the child didn't arrive at school. Emailing the teacher as a courtesy is helpful, but we still need a call to the school office.
Breakfast Charges
Please make sure you speak to your child about breakfast served at school. Many students are used to eating breakfast over the past two years when it was provided free of charge. We have no way of knowing if you intended to have your child eat breakfast with us. We want to avoid parents being surprised with a low lunch account balance due to students eating breakfast.
Cold Lunch - Purchasing Milk - 50 cents
All students taking school milk with their cold lunch must pay 50 cents, regardless of qualification for free/reduced lunch. If their lunch account does not have money in it the child will be given a water cup to use.
Talk To Your Child About Dismissal Plans
Parents, please review with your child what they should do if you are not in your "normal" spot at dismissal. They should find a teacher that is standing outside or come directly to the office. Every year we have students that decide to go home with a friend or to walk home. Both of these options create confusion and sometimes panic.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Please stay in your car during Drop Off and Pick Up. If you want to walk your child to the door we ask that you park in the front parking lot or a side street. During drop off pull next to the curb before having your child get out of the car. Having a child jump out and dart in front of other cars to reach the curb is dangerous.
Neihardt Is Hiring
The successful applicant will assist the resource special education teachers in providing identified students with intervention lessons in reading, writing, and math. The hours are approximately 8:15-3:45 M, T, Th, F and 8:15-2:30 Wednesdays. The salary is $13.32 per hour. Apply Here

MEET BEAR - NEIHARDT'S THERAPY DOG
Neihardt Community,
My name is Meghan Ranslem and I am a 3rd grade teacher at Neihardt. I am excited to let you know that I will be bringing my dog, Bear, who is a licensed therapy dog to school for visits. We got Bear as a puppy and he has grown up with both of our daughters who are 1 and 6 years old.
Bear and I have completed a Therapy dog training program through the National Organization called Love on a Leash this past fall. I have seen the benefits of having a therapy dog in schools. I know the joy and love they bring, not only to the students but also to the staff. The Millard Public Schools has been very supportive of school therapy dogs and there are several within the district.
Bear is a therapy dog, or even better-a school dog, not a service dog. Bear expects students to give him attention if they would like to! We are a certified therapy team. Research shows that a dog can be a calming influence, ease nervousness, and reduce stress. If your child has an allergy to dogs please call the school office so we can make plans to keep everyone safe. If students with pet allergies choose to pet Bear, they are encouraged to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer right away.
I look forward to sharing Bear with the students, staff, and community of Neihardt Elementary School.
If you have any questions, contact me at 402-715-8360.
Sincerely,
Meghan Ranslem
