The Messenger
A Publication of St. Gabriel the Archangel School 7/02/2022
Dear Fabulous Families -
Happy Summer! We hope you and your family are enjoying yourselves and making memories together. We are looking forward to enjoying some time off here, too, for the next several weeks.
Please find below some news and save the dates for the coming year. We look forward to seeing everyone in 44 days on Monday, August 15 for school supply drop-off! Students can meet their teacher and drop off their supplies, 4:00-6:00 pm. PFA is arranging for food trucks to add to the fun and fellowship after a long summer. PFA will also be hosting a spirit wear sale that afternoon.
We look forward to having Archangel Activities back this fall. These are enrichment activities that the school offers after school for students. Thanks to Jill Farace for bringing back these fun activities for students. Choices in the past have included everything from karate to yoga, baking to Irish dancing. Stay tuned!
Something new we are adding is our Parent University Program. About once a month we will be offering topics that you can learn more about at school. We recognize that due to the pandemic we have been limited on gatherings. We look forward to have parents join us for topics such as:
Standards-based Grading
Phonemic Awareness vs. Phonics - What's the Difference?
Bullying
What's New with Math? I Hear We Have Algebra Now and What Is Number Corner?
Help Me! How Does the Middle School Brain Work?
CARES/EANS 1/EANS 2 - How Many Acronyms Do We Need?
Welcome to our incoming Kindergarten class - the Class of 2031! See information below regarding your popsicle play date!
Our theme for the next school year will be "Created to Make a Difference". Part of our mission statement is, "As part of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, we strive to enrich our students spiritually and academically so they will be, like our patron saint, messengers of the Good News wherever they go." We recognize the unique person that God created each of us to be in order to do His work on earth. We look forward to making a positive difference for others through cultivating leadership in our students and growing in the area of service to others.
We will send out another newsletter in a few weeks once we return from vacation. Have a happy 4th of July!

Auction News!
Auction 2023
Auction date to be confirmed soon!
EANS Funding Update
In the second photo, Dr. Winkeler took delivery of boxes of decodable books. These will help our primary students with sounding out their words as they learn to read. We may need help getting all of our new items unpacked this summer!
As mentioned before, we are looking forward to partnering with Miriam Learning Center. They will be providing staffing for us including 1.5 interventionists to help out our Learning Consultant, Mrs. Favazza. In addition, speech and language assessments and services, occupational therapy and physical therapy will be available for students who may need them. We will also be partnering with an organization that will be training our faculty on inclusive practices regarding learning differences. Staff and parents will also be given the opportunity to participate in a simulation to see what it feels like to live with a learning difference. These are exciting opportunities as we care for the Body of Christ.

Girls on the Run
Is anyone interested in coaching for Girls on the Run? We have had SGA teams prior to COVID and look forward to starting new teams, if there are people interested in coaching them. Read below for more information from GOTR. We have had two parents step up to help. Who else can volunteer? Contact Mrs. McEnery, if you are interested, at tmcenery@stgab.org.
Girls on the Run St. Louis provides high quality, evidence-based programming that directly addresses the physical and mental health of girls in 3rd-8th grades. Girls in our community need a program like GOTR, and we are ready to support your school every step of the way.
We are planning for an eight-week in-person program, starting mid-September and ending with the 5K on 11/12/22.

Dear Parents,
Sometimes summer can be just as busy as the school year. Hopefully, you will find time to slow down a bit, find some time for quiet and for some self-care. Enjoy your family and friends!
The following quote and prayer is from the CAC newsletter on June 17, 2022.
Thea Bowman (1937–1990) was a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration. Her advocacy and commitment to intercultural awareness impacted many…Here Sister Thea offers images of God from the Scriptures and her people to deepen our prayer:
“I was reared in the traditional Black community—in song and prayer and conversation and story. My people graced me with multiple images of the living God.
God is bread when you’re hungry, water when you’re thirsty, a harbor from the storm. God’s a father to the fatherless, a mother to the motherless. God’s my sister, my brother, my leader, my guide, my teacher, my comforter, my friend. God’s the way-maker and burden-bearer, a heart-fixer and a mind-regulator. God’s my doctor who never lost a patient, my lawyer who never lost a case, my chaplain who never lost a battle. God’s my all in all, my everything.
God’s my rock, my sword, my shield, my lily of the valley, my pearl of great price. . . Counselor, Emmanuel,
redeemer, savior, Prince of Peace, Son of God, Mary’s little baby, wonderful Word of God.
These images come from Scripture and from the meditations of Christians. Some people see them as contradictory, but Christians see them as inadequate—all of them. But all these images are available to me. . . .
Each one corresponds to a particular need. All these images help me as I call upon God’s name.”
Sr. Thea Bowman
