January 11 - 15

Important Dates & Friendly Reminders

Monday, January 18: NO SCHOOL

Tuesday, January 19: Book order due

Please make sure your child is reading at least 15 minutes every night. We have made so much progress in reading this year! Your support at home is greatly appreciated!

In reading, we will continue to work on making sure we understand what we are reading. We will practice the three strategies we have learned to help us with this skill: reread, ask questions, and think about the meaning. We also spend some time reviewing the skills of visualizing while reading and inferring.

Our spelling words this week will follow the -ell and -ill patterns. Our words are as follows:

  1. fill
  2. hill
  3. shell
  4. tell
  5. will
  6. every
  7. just
  8. milk
  9. thrill
  10. +1 personal word to be decided as a class on Monday morning

In writing, we will continue to work on poetry. We will learn how descriptive language help our poems to be more exciting. In addition to continuing our practice with common and proper nouns, we also learn about synonyms and antonyms.

This week we will start topic 10: Counting and Number Patterns to 100. We will focus on making and using numbers 11-20 as well as using a 120 chart to find patterns in skip counting.

Please help your child at home by having them skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Give them an extra challenge by giving them the start and finish number. For another challenge, have them count backwards by 1s from 120 all the way down to 0!

Science / Engineering

This week we start our next science unit, Pebbles, Sand, and Silt! We will investigate several kinds of rocks as well as learn the properties of rocks. We will identify five sizes of rocks: large pebbles, small pebbles, large gravel, small gravel, and sand.

STEM bags will be sent home again starting this week. If you are unable to complete the task, please return the bag, with all of the materials, immediately. Students are to keep the bag for one week only, from Friday to Friday. In keeping the bag and materials at home, other students are denied the opportunity to participate. Thank you for your understanding.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me!
