General News! Week of May 1st-5th
Monday Greetings!
It’s time to BLAST OFF! Tuesday, May 2nd is our launch day. Parents are invited to come and see the 8th grade students launch their rockets. Our lift-off window is from 8:30 to 11:00. Parents must check in at the front office to attend the launches.
We will have a limited after school camp Thursday after school. There will be no bus provided this week, so students that need to stay to complete missing assignments due to absences must be WALKERS, BIKERS, OR CAR RIDERS. They will also need to get a form from the teacher they wish to complete the work for, and have their permission as well as yours to stay.
The eighth grade dance will be held on Friday, May 12th from 6:30-9:00. This is a very special occasion for our eighth graders. We hope that they all will come!
On Thursday, May 18th the eighth grade is going to have a field day from 8:00-12:30. We need parent volunteers to cook hot dogs and/or help with a field day station. Parents who are going to volunteer will need to be here by 7:30 to watch a short video and sign a waiver. Please contact Ms. Waxman, if you would be interested in helping with this.
We will also need donations of food items and other various items for our field day stations. More information will be given soon.

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week In Language Arts:
We will continue to tie in our language arts perspective of Project Lift-Off. Students will continue to follow The True Story of the "Mercury 13" Women...Almost Astronauts by Tanya Lee Stone. This book provides many interesting details about the early years of NASA, nearly twenty years before the first women were allowed into NASA's astronaut program.
Students should be completing their research on one of these 13 women, the roles that they played in the race for space, along with the many struggles they faced.
The students will then be using their research to plan and execute an "interview" with each of these "13 Women Who Dared to Dream"!
The reading homework assignment that the student's had for this quarter was a "Triple Play"...3 books of their choosing, one of which should have been a book related to STEM. That assignment was to be completed by last Thursday. Students that still wish to complete this assignment for their grades should be completed by the end of this week.
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Welcome to the last 15 days of school. Please look at your students grades on PowerSchool. Any grade that they are missing needs to be completed by this Friday. After Friday I will not replace the grade. We will NOT have time in class to work on late work. They need to complete that on their time. I am here at 7:00 and they can see me for a pass to come in and work. They may stay this Thursday after school ONLY IF THEY ARE WALKERS OR CAR RIDERS, there is no bus this week. We are finishing up out PBL unit and that will be the focus this week. Next week the students will take their final tests for me. We will take a Mastery Assessment on systems of equations, and they will take their final Mathematics Inventory. Just hang in there, the end is in sight, and the students will get a well-deserved break, but until then, we are still going full throttle!
Science- Mrs. Allen
Hello parents! This is Mrs. Allen. As you have probably heard from your children, I have been absent from school since last Tuesday. In that time, I was advised to stay home due to complications with my pregnancy. I, sadly, will not be back in the classroom for the remainder of the year. Your kids are in great hands with Mrs. Cody, an engineer, who is subbing in for me in my absence. Should they need to, students can still communicate with me by my school gmail account. I will be entering a few more grades as they year goes on. These will include the EOG reviews that should already be turned in, as well as the Mobymax assignments the students were working on before I left. Other assignments will be given by Mrs. Cody and entered by Dr. Powell as the year goes on. I am very sorry for the inconvenience of my absence. I already miss the kids so much, as I didn’t even know I would be taken out of school. I am hoping to make it to their graduation. Feel free to email me as needed. I will do my best to keep up with responding. I am rooting your kids on from home!! Finish up the year strong!
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week we will be working on the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.) certification at SMMS. In Social Studies, student will research and construct a timeline for the history of rockets. The they will combine this knowledge along with what they learned in Language Arts, Math, and Science to construct a brochure of their STEM project. The students will be able to explain the role of each member of the team, the idea of how they were going to build their rocket, actually build a rocket, testing, data gathering (telemetry), analyzing the results, and publishing the information gathered.
