San Jose Parent Newsletter for week of May 4, 2020
A letter from the principal
It is hard to believe that we are now only 15 days away from the end of the school year. Although this year has certainly not been a typical one, it has certainly been one to help us to recognize our blessings and be grateful for the things and people in our lives that are there for us.
This week, we celebrate our faculty and staff- I am grateful for the work they do every day, but especially for caring about our students and being there for them.
I also want to thank you, our parents, grandparents, and guardians, for supporting your students during this time of distance learning and for supporting our staff as they strive to give the students the best education possible from afar.
I continue to think about all of you and should you need anything, please know that we are here for you and your family.
Mrs. Knapp

Mental health services offered
Dear San Jose Parents, Students and Teachers,
I hope this email finds you well!
As many of you know, my name is Carol Bender and I am the LCSW/School Counselor providing services to the students attending San Jose Academy and Preparatory High School grades 6th through 12th.
These are trying times and we have been challenged with many changes in a short amount of time. This is difficult under the best of circumstances, let alone the present concerns about the nation’s health and wellbeing. With that said, I will be offering telehealth services for your children while the school remains closed. A parent can refer their child to me via email. Please provide your name, phone number and only the student’s initials. Once I have identified the student, I will schedule a session via Thera link that is HIPAA compliant. You may also request a phone session if you are uncomfortable about a video session. I will call you via a secure agency phone. Please email me to both carol.bender@sanjoseprep.org and cbender@jfcsjax.org
Teachers may also refer a student via email using only student id (please no names). I am available on Monday and Wednesdays between 8 am and 2 pm for a session. I will do my best to provide the best services possible and will need to schedule students according to most urgent. Mental health is as important as physical health as both are closely linked and one can affect the other either positively or negatively.
Be well, be kind
Carol Bender, LCSW/School Counselor
AP courses- updates on AP exams
The College Board released information on Friday, March 20 in regards to how AP exams will function this year. AP classes will still have AP exams, however, they will be computer based. Our AP teachers should be reaching out to all of their students via email or Google Classroom.
AP classes will continue via Google Classroom.
This is great news for us, as students will still be able to complete exams towards their AP Capstone Diplomas.
For the College Board's official publication, please click here: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update
Students can also access daily study reviews for the exams via The College Board's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/advancedplacement
Senior Class updates
Grad Bash:
We have received word from Universal Studios that based on the CDC recommendations and the Governor's stay at home mandate, Grad Bash is officially cancelled. However, they are offering us a special ticket deal that can be used through Dec 2020. All Seniors have received a detailed explanation of what their options regarding Grad Bash tickets are via their Senior Class Google Classroom page/email. Please have your Senior complete the survey they were sent in order to determine next steps.
Caps and Gowns:
Jostens mailed out all items, including caps and gowns. All Seniors should have received their items by now. Any questions should be directed to Jostens customer service at jostens.com
Please note that receiving a cap and gown does NOT automatically mean that the student has completed all of their graduation requirements! Please make sure that your Senior is working to complete their final coursework.
Prom:
Prom has been moved to June 8 in hopes that the CDC and state give clearance by then for us to be able to host activities and for our upperclassmen to be able to have this memorable experience. While we want the students to have every opportunity to have a Prom, the health and welfare of our students, staff and their families is our priority. Should CDC directives still have the current quarantine orders in place, we will have to re-address the Prom. We will keep you posted.
Graduation:
We know that the pinnacle of the high school experience is the graduation ceremony. At this time, the graduation ceremony is scheduled for June 13.
The plan is for graduation ceremonies to still take place. If for any reason they cannot take place on the scheduled date, we will move the ceremony to a later date.
Graduation requirements:
Seniors are still required to complete the mandatory 24 credits and earn the 2.0 GPA. The only change to graduation requirements for this Senior class is that any testing that a senior still needed for graduation (i.e. Algebra EOC, Biology EOC, concordant score, etc...) will be waived. Please make sure that your senior is completing all of their required coursework and that they are passing, to ensure that they will graduate.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our graduation coach, Ms. Scott, at fallon.scott@sanjoseprep.org
Mrs. Knapp has emailed all Seniors as well as reached out to them via the Senior Class Google Classroom page.
