Intermediate School Weekly Update

Updates Regarding The COVID-19 School Closure
Intermediate Update for Week of May 4 - May 8:
Last Friday Superintendent Kise shared the news that Governor Cuomo has closed schools for the remainder of the year due to the COVID-19 virus. I know that hearing the news this past Friday was extremely disappointing, but not unexpected. I am sure it was a difficult decision to make, but I believe the right call was made when considering the safety of all students, staff members, and all of our families.
I understand that closing the school building for the remainder of the year raises many questions. We expect to get guidance from the New York State Department of Education on a whole range of issues over the next couple of weeks. As we get guidance from the state, we will create procedures for the district and share them with our students, staff, and parents as soon as possible. The following bullets contain information for students and parents. You will find that many of these bullets have information but lack specific details as we wait for guidance from the state to create those detailed plans.
Third Quarter Report Cards Mailed Thursday: Our third quarter report cards were mailed last Thursday. If you do not receive a copy of your child's report card by the end of this week, please contact me at school at 483-5206 or my cell at 315-576-7090, or by emailing me at ehoskins@soduscsd.org. I want to thank Mrs. Edmonds for the amazing job she did in getting report cards printed and ready to be mailed so quickly. Included in the mailing were the following things:
3rd Quarter Report Card
Grading Rubric for 4th Quarter
Letter to parents explaining the 4th Quarter Rubric
Flyer for Spartan Spirit Days with Daily Themes
Spartan Head that students can color and display in windows
Sheet with a fold-able card for Mother's Day that students can color & give to mom
Sheet with a picture for Father’s Day that students can color & give to dad
Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, and Principal’s List for 3rd Quarter: Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, and Principal's List designations are marked on report cards as always. A connect-ed call will be sent to parents of those students this week to let them know that their child was on these lists. We are in the process of developing a procedure for getting students their certificates for this recognition, Student Of The Month recognition, and all end of the year awards.
Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, and Principal’s List for 4th Quarter: We will recognize these lists for the 4th quarter and they will be based on performance on the 4th quarter rubric that was shared with report cards. The cut-off ranges for these awards are yet to be determined- we are going to work with the JSHS and have consistent cut-offs for these lists.
Summer School: We will have some form of summer school this summer, whether it is on campus or virtual is yet to be determined. Teachers are in the process of recommending students for summer school programs. Once lists are finalized, letters inviting students to participate in summer school will be mailed to parents.
End-of-the-Year Awards: We will still have our End-Of-The-Year awards. They will be presented in a virtual format that is yet to be determined. We will share this information with parents in a letter when we notify parents their child is receiving an award.
Sixth Grade Recognition: We will not be able to have our traditional 6th Grade Breakfast this year. We will do something special to recognize our 6th grade students at the end of the year, but the format of that recognition is yet to be determined. We will share this information with parents as soon as it is available.

¡Gracias! Quiero agradecer nuevamente a nuestras familias intermedias.
Staff Appreciation Week
Staff Appreciation Week:
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. At Sodus we have always recognized that teaching students is a TEAM EFFORT and have always celebrated Staff Appreciation Week. Our Intermediate School Improvement Team had already discussed Staff Appreciation Week during several meetings earlier this year and had some great ideas to celebrate all of the groups of Spartan employees who support our students. Unfortunately, the building closure has made those ideas impossible to implement this year, but we are going to hang onto those ideas and hopefully we will implement them next year! On behalf of all of the students, parents, and staff members that serve on our Intermediate School Improvement Team, I can definitely tell you the contributions of all of our staff members at Sodus are recognized and appreciated deeply. Thank you to all Spartan Staff Members!Fostering Resilience
This extended period of social distancing is taking a toll on all of us, but it is especially difficult for students. Attached below is a link to a short video on resilience and some great resources for teachers and parents for fostering resilience. I like to think of resiliency as the ability to bounce back from adversity, and research shows that how resilient we are can be shaped, especially when we are young.

A Thank-you For Our Intermediate Families
Thank you! I want to again thank our Intermediate families. Our students' success is always highest when we have a strong partnership between school and home, but never has that partnership been more important than now. Thank you for all that you are doing to support distance learning at home.
As always, please contact me with questions or concerns through email at ehoskins@soduscsd.org, over the phone at school at 483-5206, or on my cell phone at 315-576-7090.
