Principal Updates
Hi all!
We are preparing to close out the second 6 weeks of school and I am super proud of the way our students are focused in the classroom and the amazing job our teachers are doing. Thank you all for partnering with us to support our kiddos. Below are some updates and resources. Please review and as always reach out to us with any questions.

MAP Test Scores and Resources
It is important to know that the MAP Test is about growth and challenge. When students are taking the test, it gets more challenging the more they get correct. Let your child know that it's a good thing that the questions seem more difficult because it means they are getting the questions correct. When they test in January, they will have more learning under their belt and will be able to again do their best to show how much they have grown.
IMPORTANT School Attendance Updates
To ensure that all students comply with the 90% attendance rule (Education Code 25.092), HISD is implementing a credit recovery plan. Lovett has implemented an attendance committee consisting of administrators and campus support personnel. We will closely monitor both excused and unexcused attendance to ensure that students meet attendance requirement. It is important to note that attendance is monitored starting at kindergarten.
The attendance committee will meet at least once/6 weeks and review students whose absences are starting to accumulate. The committee will review the following:
- The number of absences that count towards the 90% rule. Both excused and unexcused absences count towards the 90% rule. Medical-based absences are excused with valid documentation.
- When a student's attendance drops below 90%, but remains at least at 75%, the student is eligible to recoup the academic time by completing a plan outlined by the campus attendance committee.
- Making up seat time means the student will be assigned course specific tutoring to take place after school or on a Saturday. Students who fail to complete the assigned hours will not be eligible for summer school and could be retained.
- If a student fails to complete the makeup seat time according to the attendance plan or if the student's attendance falls below 75%, the parent may petition the attendance committee. The committee will review the student's entire attendance record, reasons for absence and ask for documentation. The committee will determine if based on the reasons and documentation a student should be awarded credit for completion of the school year.
- Parents of children with attendance concerns should look out for warning or violation letters. These letters are to communicate that your child is in jeopardy or have already violated the attendance requirement.
We encourage you to stay connected with your child's teacher to communicate absences. For medical appointments schedule this afterschool when possible and turn in any medical documentation as soon as possible.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE 90% RULE
Houston ISD is dedicated to academic achievement and success for all scholars. Regular attendance is critically important, because students who are absent lose instructional seat time, thus creating a lost opportunity to learn, ask questions and engage in class activities. Poor attendance can be excused/unexcused absences and truancies, which ultimately impacts our students’ academic performance.
In accordance with Texas Education Code Section 25.092 (Attendance for Credit 90% Rule); A student at any grade level from kindergarten through grade 12 shall not be given credit or final grade for a class unless the student is in attendance 90 percent of the days in which the class is offered.
This is where we need your help and joint collaboration by ensuring the following is done if your child will be absent, late or leaving early from school:
Keep Connected – Upon return please send either a letter, email or phone call to the school explaining the reason for that day(s) absence, if your child was in need medical attention, please provide a licensed doctor or physician note.
Keep Students Healthy – Make sure students get sleep, eat well and exercise. If you are not certain whether to send your child to school due to illness, call your Campus Nurse or Attendance Clerk to discuss the situation. If your child must miss school more than three days of, please contact your campus as soon as possible; medical verification may be required.
