STAAR TESTING NEXT WEEK
What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts/Reading/Writing: We are still working on our research project. This is a major grade for our students. The students are at different points in their project. Soon students will start making a diorama without shoe boxes. Please be aware next week, your child may ask a plastic animal from a craft store to put in their diorama. The animals can also be made out of lego, clay or paper.
We have these steps when writing for our project:
- Brainstorming to pick a topic
- Planning with a KWL graphic organizer/ R.A.N graphic organizer
- Researching the topic using multiple sources
- Writing about the topic
- Revising our writing
- Publishing our work
All of these steps are very important in creating a complete project. The students will have an additional part of the project which will require your help at home.
Social Studies: We are starting a personal financial literacy unit. We are looking at the topic of wants and needs. Some of the big ideas from this unit will be:
Families meet basic needs in different ways.
People exchange goods and services to meet their needs and wants.
Work provides opportunities for people to produce and consume goods and services.
Spelling/Words Their Way: We will be ending Words Their Way this week- no sort will be coming home. On Monday, we are giving your child a list of 5 high frequency words. On Friday, we will have a sight word test on the following words - under, why, carry, read, own. Please work with your child to learn these words. Your child should be able to read and write these words with fluency and automaticity.
Math: We are in data analysis unit. We will be collecting data in class, and creating several different types of graphs. The graphs we will create and look at are: picture graph, bar graph and tally marks charts. This unit will contain a lot of reading and thinking. We will take surveys and collect data for at least 3-4 categories. We are asking students questions like:
Data: 10 people like bats, 3 like foxes and 3 people like opossums.
We could ask:
- How many chose bats?
- How many chose opossums?
- What 2 animals were chosen by the same number of students?
- How many more people like bat over opossums?
Our last unit will cover personal financial literacy. We will be integrating vocabulary and concepts from Social Studies.
Science: We will finish up learning about how energy flows through a food chain and towards the end of the week we will be learning about habitats.
With STAAR TESTING we will monitor and adjust for schedule for testing
LESS THAN 20 SCHOOL DAYS! We still have time for learning!
- Know where your child's library books are. If they are lost, please contact Mrs. Moore in the library. She can let you know about replacement procedures. All library books must be turned in by May 25th.
- LLI Bag and Book for those students that are in LLI (should be in your child's backpack). We will ask the students to turn in materials on May 17th.
- We will still have reading groups, and we are still checking reading logs. Please make sure your child has reading group materials with them every day. We might be able to pull reading groups on a day that is not normally their "scheduled" day. Soon we will be picking up the guided reading materials - but not this week! The students will be asked to turn in materials on May 18th.
- Please make sure that your children are going to bed at a decent hours. With the longer hours with sunlight come softball, baseball, soccer games, and other activities, when children are tired their behavior can less than pleasant at school.
