Two Systems?

Civil Law: Law of Nations:

The Civil Law was applied to all citizens. Applied to noncitizens, and citizens,

anyone under the Roman Rule.

The Twelve Tables- One Law from the Twelve Tables is Land Rights. "When above mentioned, let them state their own cases either in the Continuum or Forum, by making a brief statement in the presence of a Judge, between the rising of the sun and moon: and, both be present, let them speak so each party may hear. "

Common Principles

General Laws of Ancient Rome

-People, same status, equal before Law
-Innocent until proven guilty
-Allowed to face the accuser, and defend themselves
-Clear evidence needed

-Based on fairness, allowing judges to interpret the law


The Roman Law is still used today in our Court and Law System
