Greetings!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Super Bowl weekend! Our city ROSE!
The next few months will get busy! Stay connected. If you have not had the opportunity to conference with your child's teacher, please request a conference to find out how your child is performing this year. Check your child's progress often.
Does your child:
- know all required sight words for his/her grade level?
- know math facts (Addition/subtraction/multiplication)?
- is your child reading nightly for 20 minutes at minimum?
- know your child's Lexile score?
- Are you asking the right questions to check for understanding when your child reads?
- Are you on iRead/iReady nightly?
- Is your child practicing on ReadWorks a few times per week?
Please partner with us to help all students succeed at WCES! We got this!

5 STARS! Let's get it!
Parents, the 2018-17 Georgia Parent Survey is open for this school year. The Georgia Parent Survey contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphone or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, you may use computers at the school. Please visit our Parent Resource Center.
Last year we reached our goal of approximately 200 completed surveys! This was an increase from 2017-18. Let's reach 300+ this year. So far we only have 124 surveys completed. I know we can do it! Thanks in advance for your completion.
Be reminded, that this rating is open to the public and establishes the overall climate rating for our school and our local community. These survey results often "paint the picture" of our residential areas and impact the story for prospective home owners. We want to ensure that we are supporting our school in the most positive way. As shared in our results from last year, we had an awesome 2017-18 school year and want to do even better this year! You helped make us 4 STARS, now lets hit 5 STARS!. If there are specific school concerns, we ask that you contact the school directly and allow the school to address those concerns locally. Copies of the 2017-18 results are available in our Parent Resource Center.
All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. The Georgia Parent Survey link is posted below.

Family Fun- Reading Connection
Read Between the Lines
If your child reads “The snowman looked smaller than it did yesterday,” can she figure out the snowman is melting? Making inferences, or understanding what’s happening when the author doesn’t come right out and say it, is an important comprehension skill. Try these strategies.
Make up riddles
Take turns thinking of a person, place, or thing and giving each other clues to guess it. Example: “Sometimes I am round, and sometimes I’m a crescent shape. You see me at night. What am I?” (The moon.) Then, pose “riddles” from stories you read together: “In the story, the girl frowned and stomped off. How do you think she feels?” Your youngster may answer, “I think she is angry.”
Solve mysteries
Read a mystery, and let your child pretend to be a detective. She might get a small notepad and a pencil to jot down or dictate clues. (“Jack was not at work the day the vase was stolen.”) Her mission is to use the clues to solve the mystery before the book characters do.
Infer in real life
Get your youngster in the habit of making everyday inferences. If you put a skillet, a loaf of bread, and cheese slices on the kitchen counter, invite her to infer what you’re cooking (grilled cheese). Or if you place the cat carrier by the front door, ask her what inference the cat could make—he’s probably going to the vet!♥
It’s poetry night!
For a cozy family evening filled with reading and fun, try holding a poetry night. Check out children’s poetry books from the library, and enjoy these activities.
“Musical” verses
Line up a row of chairs, one for each player and a few extras. Each person chooses two short poems, writes them on pieces of paper, and places each sheet under a chair. Then, play music while everyone walks around the chairs. When the music stops, sit on the closest chair, and read the poem underneath—no one is out. Keep going until everyone gets a chance to read every poem.
Poem-in-a-bag
Before poetry night, every family member picks a poem, puts related “props” into a brown bag, and writes the title on the bag. For a poem about lemonade, for example, your youngster might include a
lemon, a sugar packet, and a cup. Pull out your props as you read your poem to everyone.♥
Syllable shout-out
Who can spot something with two syllables? How about three? With this game, your child will practice listening to separate syllables—a skill that will help her sound out words.
Materials: pencil, paper, picture book or magazine
Let your youngster write each player’s name across the top of a piece of paper. Then, she flips to a random page in the book or magazine and says either “one,” “two,” or “three.” Everyone looks at the open page for an item with that number of syllables. The first person to find one points to the object and says its name slowly, pronouncing each syllable separately. (For three, someone might spot a car-ou-sel.) Help your child write the word and the number of syllables under the player’s name. That person goes next and turns to a new page. After 10 rounds, add the scores, and the player with the highest total wins.♥
Reading is FUN!
Six Flags Reading Challenge is happening now. Encourage your child to read each night. Help them to record their minutes on the reading log. Students have to earn 360 minutes to earn a FREE Six Flags ticket for Summer 2019. All forms should be completed and submitted to your child's teacher by March 1, 2018.
Synergize Habit #6
To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn't just happen on its own. It's a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty--you name it.

Safety First!
Thanks for working with us to ensure safety for the students.
We still need your patience and support as we execute the morning drop off process. The cafeteria doors close at 7:35 AM each morning. Breakfast ends at that time. Students are tardy at 7:41 AM. Parents are asked to sign their children in and get a tardy pass prior to reporting to class. Parents who wish to walk their child to class must also sign in at the front desk.
Please help us by using the car rider loop in the front of the building for all student drop-offs in the mornings. The car rider loop moves fast but it does require some wait time and patience. This is the safest area for student drop offs. We have assigned staff to support students as they get out of cars. The bus ramp in the back is reserved for buses only. If parents are using the parking lot near the bus ramp area for parking, they are asked to park their vehicles and escort their child into the building. Students should not be dropped off and allowed to run across the bus ramp to enter the building. We want students to be safe. We had a few cars moving fairly fast in this area. This is a safety concern. Remember, the doors open at 7:10 AM for student arrival. Thanks in advance for your support. If we have parents that can volunteer in the bus ramp area, please let us know. We could use the extra hands and eyes to ensure safety for the students.
Identification Required: Please remember to bring your identification in with you when you visit the school. Parents that wish to move pass the front lobby/atrium area will need to sign in and receive a visitor's badge. Any persons checking out a student must also have an ID and be listed on the child's records for check out. Beginning August 13th, parents will be asked to return to the front office to sign in if they do not have a visible visitor's badge. All parents must have their liscenses scanned for the 2018-19 School year by the front office staff before being able to use the kiosk for signing in.
Volunteer Registration: To begin the volunteer process, please visit www.fultonschools.org and complete the child abuse reporting training and the online registration process. When registering, one must use their legal name as it appears on your government identification. The process is self-paced. On your first visit to the school, your government identification will be required.
http://www.fultonschools.org/en/community/Pages/volunteerfaq.aspx
Be reminded to complete the volunteer registration in advance if you are planning to attend field trips with your child's class as a chaperone.
Thanks for your support!
Our School Day Start/End Times
Thanks in advance for your support in ensuring that our students get to school each day on time and ready for instruction. Breakfast begins at 7:10 a.m. and ends at 7:35 a.m. daily so that we can ensure that students are in class on time to begin their instructional day. School instructional hours are from 7:40 a.m. —2:20 p.m. each day. Parents are asked to escort their children inside and sign them in if they are tardy. Help us protect the instructional day. Please limit early dismissal/check-outs. If needed, please do so before 2:00 PM. Remember keep your child’s pick up and emergency contacts updated and to sign in during each visit. ID is required for anyone visiting or checking your child our of school.
