Westview Staff Spotlight
Brian Squire
1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I teach 9-12 Beginning and Early Intermediate English Language Development.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
This is my 18th year at Westview.
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
I appreciate the trust and the support of the Westview community. I feel a sense of autonomy that allows me to focus on meeting students' needs.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today?
My favorite quote is a line from the movie Contact (1997): “You're an interesting species. An interesting mix. You're capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other.”
5. What is something about you that many people at Westview might not know? (Hobbies, talents, interests, fun facts, etc...)
I love nature and the outdoors. I'm fascinated with the beauty of the universe. I'm a linguistic nerd. I like to engage in friendly philosophical debate. I'm also a connoisseur of smooth jazz.

Updated Statement on Ukraine
Dear BSD Community,
Last Thursday, we sent out a statement that referenced “the increasing tensions in Eastern Europe” and went on to offer support for those in our community being impacted. Since then, we’ve heard from members of our Ukrainian community here in the Beaverton School District. They feel strongly that the message minimized the reality of what is occurring in Ukraine. They are correct. While unintentional, our words did not clearly or fully describe the gravity of this moment in history and how it is affecting people's lives.
To be clear, we recognize the unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russia on Ukraine. We recognize that Russia has invaded a sovereign country and unleashed war on millions of innocent Ukrainians. We know many of you have loved ones caught in harm’s way. We empathize deeply with those trapped in cities under attack and those who have been forced to flee to neighboring countries.
War is ugly and difficult to explain to children. Your students’ teachers are doing their best to discuss the events of our day in an age appropriate way. But we know that your children likely will have questions for you, as well. We offer these resources as a starting point:
Again, our apologies to the Ukrainian community. We stand with you in this moment of need.
Don Grotting
Superintendent
Here Comes the Bus App
Why the switch?
"Here Comes the Bus" shows the real-time location of your student's bus and gives scheduled and actual arrival times. The new app also provides notifications when the bus is near. Currently, all large buses have the tracker. We are working on equipping our smaller buses with the tracker.
How do you sign up?
- Download "Here Comes the Bus" app or visit herecomesthebus.com
- Click the "Sign Up" button.
- Enter school code 29743 and click "Next" followed by "Confirm."
- Complete the "User Profile" box.
- Under "My Students," click "Add." Enter your student's last name and student ID number.
- Once you confirm your information, you're ready to begin.
Please include your student's student ID number in your email.
Changes in Alcohol and/or Dangerous Drugs Policy
Dear BSD Families and Staff,
Each year, families indicate on the Enrollment Verification Form that they have reviewed the district’s Student Code of Conduct. We want to alert you that the policy related to Alcohol and/or Dangerous Drugs has been updated. Please feel free to review it.

BSD Proposed 2022 Bond
In May 2022, voters will decide on a new proposed capital improvement bond. If passed, the bond would raise about $723 million to be used on projects across the district including seismic stability upgrades, improvement of air ventilation systems, replacement of aging roofs and additional classroom space to alleviate overcrowding. Bond money also would be used to improve accessibility in special education classrooms, enhance learning spaces and replace all one-to-one student Chromebooks and iPads. The two largest proposed projects are the complete rebuilds of Beaverton High School and Raleigh Hills K-8 School.
The bond proposal will appear on the May 17, 2022 ballot.

COVID Guidance and Updates
Masking Mandate Update
Sent by BSD on February 24, 2022
Today, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) announced that it will lift the mandatory mask requirement for all indoor public spaces, including schools, on March 19. The previous date for schools was March 31. On March 19, the decision about whether to continue masking becomes a district-level decision.
The Beaverton School District continues to engage with our stakeholders, including our employee associations. No decision had been made.
Please stay tuned for updates.

Reminders
Did You Know? (Reminder)
Indoor Mask (Reminder)
We have had some extended breaks lately and want to make sure all of our students remember masks are required at all times unless you are eating in the cafeteria or a designated lunch space. It is important we all do our part to keep everyone safe. Wearing a mask includes covering your nose as well. We are asking all food be consumed in designated eating spaces and not in the hallways while traveling between classes. The more we can ensure we are masked around each other, the better chance we have to maintain a desired level of safety. We appreciate our students following this and our parents and guardians reminding them from home.

Beaverton School District Antiracist Vision Statement
The BSD School Board unanimously voted to adopt an Antiracist Vision Statement. Informed by the work of the Beaverton Multicultural Educator Community (BMEC) and the 40-member Equitable Policies Task Force made up of students, family, community members and staff, the vision statement will guide our implementation of our Every Student Belongs Policy (ACB) and help ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming learning spaces for all.
Antiracist Vision Statement
Every student and employee has the right to learn and work in a safe and inclusive school environment that honors their race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and national origin.
Beaverton School District owns that our student outcomes currently point to our part in perpetuating institutional racism, and we commit to actions that address the current culture that is leading to these outcomes. Schools are critical in providing safe and creative opportunities for people to learn about different cultural and racial identities, have conversations about pressing issues and correct injustice wherever it exists. We commit to eliminating the structures, policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in our schools and in our community.
Beaverton School District will authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities. We will work to dismantle policies and systems that perpetuate institutional racism and barriers to education and other school-related activities. Students and families of color will see themselves represented in curriculum, materials, instruction, classrooms and all school activities in our district. Our district will honor, respect, represent, engage with and be accessible to students and adults from all communities.
Eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. We commit to removing racism, white supremacy, hate speech and all forms of bigotry from our schools and communities.
Our district will:
- Seek and incorporate student, family, educator and administrator input in decision-making processes.
- Provide ongoing anti-bias and antiracist education to every staff member.
- Enforce Every Student Belongs procedures to prevent, interrupt and stop racist and biased incidents among students and between staff and students or community members.
- Create an inclusive learning community that honors, respects, represents, engages and is accessible to learners from all communities.
- Create permanent district funding and resources to promote equitable policies, structures and practices for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.
- Implement policies, procedures and professional development to confront and eliminate conscious and unconscious racism and review these policies and procedures regularly to ensure we are meeting our commitments.
