Thinking About You
LES Weekly Social-Emotional Update * June 12, 2020
Hello LES Families!
We're looking forward to seeing our 2nd and 3rd graders this week! Please review Mrs. Lockett's guidelines (linked at the bottom of the newsletter) for pick up/drop off of materials at LES next week (in the Craven Lane upper parking lot loop), according to the following schedule:
- 2nd grade: Tuesday, June 16 from 8:30-1:00 **new date**
- Make up PreK-2: Wednesday, June 17 from 8:30 - 1:00; help yourself to your labeled bag in the vestibule
- 3rd grade: Thursday, June 18 from 8:30-1:00
Please also review Mrs. Lockett's letter, linked at the bottom of this newsletter, regarding placement for our rising 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders.
Our SEL theme this week continued to explore problem solving, which is the last unit of our Second Step social-emotional curriculum. This week we focused on brainstorming more that one solution to a problem, and then deciding which one would work best for everyone. Be sure to listen to this week's read aloud to see how Brontorina and her friends solve a HUGE problem!
With only one week left, continue to Do your BEST, Nothing LESs!

Coping Skills of the Week
It's important to try lots of different coping skills in order to find the ones that work best for you. The more coping skills we have to help us thru difficult times, the more resilient we will be. Learn more about the 5 Coping Skills Styles (with a handy checklist) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TjAYs7RBuM&feature=youtu.be. (Credit: Coping Skills for Kids)
Don't forget our coping skill from the last few weeks:
- Find one good thing that happens each day and write it down
- Talk to someone you trust
- Wrap up in blanket or build a pillow fort
- Picture the people you care about
- Do a kindness for someone by writing a letter or baking a cake
- List your positive qualities and think positive thoughts
- Imagine your perfect world
- Take a deep breath (star breath, candle breath, belly breath - so many choices!)
- Think of a different solution for next time
Which ones work best for you??

More Ways to Practice Mindfulness
Listen to this week’s Imagine Neighborhood Podcast- Episode 16: IF you Steal Socks, THEN Sock Goblins! Sock goblins have stolen all the socks - right before the Sock Puppet Festival! Help Scotty and Princess Donnasaurus as they explore different ideas and possible consequences before they choose a solution. After you listen to the podcast, scroll down for more activities - involving music, movement, and mindfulness :-) Check it out at: https://www.imagineneighborhood.org/post/sockgoblins
Yoga 4 Classrooms. Check out this Yoga 4 Classrooms activity called "Do Your Best." The activity requires students to cross their arms across their body, which encourages both sides of the brain to "talk" to each other, increasing focus and coordination. See if you can add the chant - which ends with our LES theme - to do my BEST! https://mailchi.mp/yoga4classrooms/mindful-activity-of-the-day-14-do-my-best
