The Second Grade Scoop
June 2nd, 2017
Dear 2R Families,
While this week was a short week due to Memorial Day, we managed to pack in a lot of learning! We are nearing the end of most of our units. We have also been enjoying our ABC countdown. Be sure to check out the pictures below from Outside Day!

Math
We have officially completed our End of the Year assessment! This assessment covers everything we've learned since September. Everyone in class did a fantastic job!
This week, we continued with Unit 9. We plan to finish the unit next week. This unit lays the groundwork for learning multiplication. Students work with arrays to practice repeated addition skills, which they will eventually transfer over to multiplication skills. If you want to get a head start on multiplications facts this summer, the students are all very motivated to learn them right now!
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts. If they have mastered those, start practicing multiplication!
- Continue to encourage students to explain their thinking aloud or on paper.
- Talk about fractions or "equal shares" you see in daily life. We know all about halves, thirds and fourths at this point.
- Include your child in any measuring or estimating done in everyday life.
- Check out Number Grid Difference, Shape Capture and Basketball Addition games on the Everyday Math website. Please email me if you need your student's login.
Reader's Workshop
At home, please continue to...
- Encourage your child to read for at least 15 minutes each night.
- Encourage your child to read aloud to you from time to time. They can read a book aloud to you or even just the dinner recipe.
- Ask your child questions about what they have read.
