Infectious Diseases

8.L.1.1 Summarize the basic characteristics of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites relating to the spread, treatment and prevention of disease.

8.L.1.2 Explain the difference between epidemic and pandemic as it relates to the spread, treatment and prevention of disease.

Microbiology Is the branch of science that deals

with microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses,

archaea, fungi and protozoa.

A Virus is a microorganism and a non-living pathogen that can

change or mutate. It infects a host cell and replicates to cause

illness and disease.Ways to prevent a virus, vaccine. Also ways

to keep viruses from spreading, quarantine.

Single-celled prokaryotes that can cause disease.

Multiply rapidly and can form colonies.

A singled-celled or multi-cellular organism that

can decompose or absorb organic matter.

Ex:Mushrooms,yeast and molds

A parasite is an organism that lives in an other organism.

Called host cell,Taking nutrients and often harming them

in process.

An outbreak is a sudden disease that is

extended in several countries,outbreaks

can last up two day or years.

Is a widespread is a infection disease

in a community at a specific time.

Pandemic is a huge outbreak of an infections disease

that spreads though human population across a large

region. For example multiple regions or even worldwide.

Epidemic v.s Pandemic

An Epidemic is when a contagious disease only affects one specific area or regions.

While on the other hand a Pandemic is a contagious disease that affects a very large

population of humans when giving a result of multiple areas worldwide.

Outbreak-occurrence of a disease greater than otherwise be expected at a particular time and place

Epidemic-an outbreak of a disease that affects many people in one specific area or region

Pandemic-an epidemic that spreads all over the world

Vector-an insect that transmits disease

Pathogen-A virus,bacteria,fungi,parasite and protozoa

Protozoa-Algae and amoebas

Virus-A non-living pathogen that can mutate or change and infects the host cell

Bactria-Singled celled organisms that reproduce rapidly

Parasite-An organism that lives in other organism

Fungi-A single-celled or multi-cellular organism

Host cell-A call that a virus invades

Quarantine-A time or place of isolation
