Dear Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the mid-week break. Here are some reminders:

Tutoring begin Sunday, October 11

At this time, I will not be creating a Shutterfly account

Math

Students continue to work on the subtraction (and addition) facts through 20. Next week, we will be starting a unit on place value. This unit teaches students to count, read and write whole numbers to 100, represent numbers to 100 using multiple models and to understand the relationship between numbers, quantities and place value in whole numbers up to 100.

Reading

Students are reading just right books and trying to identify the main idea or focus of a story. They do this by asking themselves questions such as:

"What were the beginning, middle and end?"

"What was the problem/solution?"

"Who was the main character?"

These questions and answers help boost reading skills and assist students to go from the "Learning to read" stage to the "Reading to learn"stage.

Writing

Students are working on a variety of skills as they continue to write Personal Narratives. We are currently focusing in writing using Grade 2 conventions. This includes using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and for proper nouns, using a period, exclamation point or question mark and spelling sight words.

Social Studies

Sadly our Everyday Heroes unit is coming to an end. This has been a great opportunity for kids to look inside themselves and make thoughtful decisions about their choices.

Next week, we will begin a unit on Life Cycles. This unit will look at the life cycle of a plant and essential plant parts and functions; and the life cycles of an amphibian and a mammal.

We will also be going on a field trip to an organic farm - more details to follow!
