The Tiger Times
The Monthly Franklin Family Newsletter - February 2021
Happy February! January was a challenging month for many in our community. We are so relieved to see Covid rates declining again, and we hope that February will bring news of returned health and safety for all.
In that spirit, we are also thrilled to share that we can once again host a Materials Distribution - on February 11th - as well as a Food Distribution, which will include huge amounts of food supplies for Franklin families. Please pre-register here for the food distribution so we know how many families to expect. We look forward to seeing you on the 11th in a safe way.
February also brings with it our school's focus on Black History Month learning - to elevate Black voices and history in ways that we strive to do all year, but with greater focus this month - and on the celebration of Lunar New Year, a beloved holiday for so many of our Franklin families. We look forward to celebrating together. More details below!
In recognition of your important role as "reading teachers," this month we are excited to announce the Franklin Reading Awards! Nominations will come from YOU, families, when your child 1) reads to family members, or 2) reads for 20 days straight. Again, more details below. :)
As always, thank you for your amazing partnership with our teachers and staff, as distance learning continues. We are so proud of the ways in which all members of the Franklin community are working together to make this challenging year as best as possible for our children.
If you have any questions or concerns or feedback, we are always eager to hear from you. Please email us at Franklin@ousd.org at any time!
With love and gratitude,
Ms. Lai & Ms. Sufrin
See you on February 11th for Materials and Food Distribution!

Spotlight on Franklin Teachers!
Ms. Yeager
Hey Tigers! I have been so happy to be a part of the Franklin comminituy for the past 6 years as a 4th grade teacher. Before Franklin, I taught at Horace Mann Elementary for 6 years as a 3rd and 5th grade teacher. I love teaching and being able to make learning fun and engaging for my students. If you spend a day in my classroom and don't smile, something went wrong! It has been so rewarding to see so many of my students from the past 12 years who are now in college thriving and being their best. It makes it all worth it! I grew up in The Bay Area and went to college in Louisiana at LSU (Geaux Tigers!). When I'm not teaching, I enjoy going on adventures with my husband and 2 daughters, shopping, and traveling. As soon as we're safe from this virus, I'm going on vacation!
Mr. Silver
Greetings Franklin Community! I have enjoyed the last 5 years of teaching at Franklin Elementary in 3rd and 4th grade. Thank you to all my students, families for their continued support. Franklin is a very special place because of its diverse cultures, dedicated staff, and wonderful students. Previously, I served as an Education Director for the Boys & Girls Club in California, New Mexico, and New York. I am a graduate of both Long Beach State and San Francisco State. Go Gators! In my classroom, I strive to create a culture of acceptance, inclusion, and inquiry. My favorite school subject is Social Studies because it connects the past to the present and helps students understand why the world around them is the way it is. When I am not teaching I enjoy riding my bike, trail running, and spending time with my family at the local East Bay parks.
Ms. Douglas
Hello, my name is Ms. Douglas. I have taught fourth grade at Franklin for the past ten years -- wow! Our active and diverse community brings me joy. I delight in contributing to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical, our school’s Ofrenda for Dias de los Muertos, Lunar New Year Assembly, and the Spring Book Fair. These co-curricular activities allow me to interact with other teachers, more students, their families and to experience a fuller view of the Franklin Community.
I am married with three children. We are Californians and enjoy going to the beach especially in Marina del Rey. We enjoy outdoor Jazz and Salsa venues. We love visiting museums, especially those with hands-on activities. You may see us cleaning a beach or park every Earth Day and helping with turkey give-aways in West Oakland. We are committed to various community service projects in our East Bay Community.
The current class year finds us bonding and laughing over jokes on Fridays or class art projects.
So Proud of our Oratorical Performers and Congratulations to the Students who will be Representing Franklin at the District Competition!
