SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT GOALS
The Olson staff is committed to our goals for student growth. We work collaboratively to provide a school environment that both challenges and supports students to work to their potential and to meet the grade level standards for reading, writing, math, science, fine arts and communication. We encourage a "growth mindset" and we have high expectations for all students.
As we continue to provide academic supports, we also realize the vital role of positive relationships among students and staff. Interactions are respectful and positive, and our expectations for student behavior are consistent.
Your continued partnership with the Olson staff is vital. Please call with any questions or concerns. Communication with the classroom teachers and/or the school office is important to us.
You are reminded to schedule your February Parent Teacher Conferences as soon as possible. More information will come through a district email early this week. If you have any questions about how to set up your time, please call the office.

READING TO YOUR CHILDREN
Your child is becoming an independent reader - but that doesn't mean you have to stop reading aloud. In fact, older readers reap many benefits from story time. Some families enjoy shared reading time, with alternating the reading of pages or chapters. Here's advice for deciding what to read.
Stretch his abilities: Choose something more challenging than what your youngster can read on his own. You'll expose him to more complex plots and harder words. Stop periodically to check whether he understands whats going on, and keep a dictionary nearby to look up new words. Idea: Scan books or read reviews ahead of time to make sure the content isn't too mature.
Show enthusiasm: Pick reading material you and your child will both enjoy. Whether it's a full length novel or a short article, the pleasure you take in reading is likely to be contagious. Consider a classic book you loved at your youngster's age or a review of a restaurant the two of you would like to try.
JANUARY FOCUS - INTEGRITY
Here are some ways you can promote INTEGRITY at home ~
1. Articulate family values.
- Family values impact healthy child and adolescent development in profound ways.
2. Develop a moral vocabulary.
- Use words such as honesty, respect, courage... and teach the behaviors that demonstrate these.
3. Reward respectful behavior.
- When children feel good about doing what’s right, they learn to measure the quality of their lives beyond grades and extra-curricular achievements. When your children show integrity, tell them what you admire about their behavior.
4. Explore consequences.
- Learning integrity takes practice. Like all learning, failure produces consequences. When children explore, understand, and accept the consequences of failure, critical learning occurs.
5. Respond appropriately.
- Parents cannot control their child’s behavior, but they can respond with consistency when reinforcing family values. When learning is considered the foremost goal, dishonest or disrespectful behavior becomes a teachable moment for parents.
6. Be a role model.
- Children often name parents as their role models. Research shows that role models live their values in the world. They help children understand how values, like integrity, are part of a successful and rewarding life.
