Born in 1485, he first set sail to the New World at the age of 19. Hernando Cortez later joined an expedition to Cuba. In 1518, he set off to explore Mexico. He defeated the Aztec empire in 1519 claimed Mexico for Spain and built Mexico City, which became a Spanish fortress in the New World.
