BERRIEN COUNTY YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Berrien Community Foundation is recruiting teens for its youth advisory committee! This club offers leadership, scholarship, and learning opportunities. T.E.A.M. (Teens Exhibiting Able Minds) is the voice for youth in Berrien County. In addition to service projects and tours of non-profits, TEAM has their own fund where they award over $40,000 in grants each year to projects that affect Berrien County youth!
We hope you will reach out to some students you think may be a good fit. It doesn’t have to be the most involved student or the student with the highest GPA: just someone who is looking to make an impact in their community.
To apply, please visit: T.E.A.M. (Teens Exhibiting Able Minds) | Berrien Community Foundation

OPTIONAL SAT PREP
Dear Parents and Students:
The SAT is changing format, beginning with this October's PSAT. By March 2024, the SAT will fully transition into a new, digital format. Now is the perfect time to start your preparation for this test.
I cannot emphasize enough how critical it is to prepare for college entrance exams. The SAT is now MANDATORY for all juniors in the states of Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois (among others). Colleges accept BOTH the the ACT and SAT, so there are two keys to try and unlock the same door when it comes to college admission. This course can help students maximize their scores, opening the doors to more competitive colleges as well as bigger money scholarships.
Register for SAT/PSAT Prep SEP 2023 with Dr. Carlin @ http://www.drcarlinstestprep.com/
Call Dr. Carlin directly at (517) 803-5037 if you have any questions or for information on SAT, ACT, one on one prep, or college application consulting.

SAFETY DRILLS
Every year, schools in Michigan are required to complete a number of safety drills. This year is no different. The high school will complete at least FIVE fire drills, THREE lockdown drills, and TWO tornado drills. All faculty and staff in the building have been trained in these drills. They have your child's best safety interest at heart. Procedures will be reviewed with your child in classes in regards to these drills. It is expected that all students will take the drills seriously and follow teacher direction, so that we are prepared in the event that a real issue occurs in the building. We do not announce the date or times of the drills in advance as we want our staff and students to do their best to follow the procedures in place for that particular drill. Should you have questions or concerns about the drills, you are welcome to contact me at the high school office.

Boys Varsity Soccer falls to Allegan 2 - 0
In a very fun and entertaining soccer game where both teams played well, The Allegan Tigers defeated the Watervliet Panthers boys soccer team at Panther Stadium 2-0. The loss dropped the Panthers season record to 3-3-0.
Strong efforts in goal by Landin Fuller (19 saves), plus strong field efforts from mutliple players including Larry Perez, Nathan Harasewicz, JD Zuniga, Sam Crago, Alex Hicks, Phoenix Anderson, Jacob Shunkweiler and the rest of the team. It was a tough loss for the kids on a night when everyone played so hard.
Come see us Monday night in Saugatuck at 6:45. Hope to see you all there.

IMPACT WATERVLIET
Since 2019 the student-athletes of Watervliet high school and their coaches have made a positive impact on their community through “Impact Watervliet.”
Team up with the city of Watervliet, over 100 student-athletes from all of the sports teams spent time downtown Watervliet this afternoon working on various project to help beautify the city. From cleaning windows, to painting the bridge at Flaherty Park, mowing, putting mulch down at the new Oasis Park, and painting and staining doors at City Hall. By the end of the project, student-athletes and coaches volunteered over 150 man hours to their city. Special thanks to Danielle Tiedeman (City Manager), Jeff Allen and the city workers for all of their support and preparation for “Impact Watervliet 2023.” Check out the pictures below of our athletes hard at work.
MONDAY NIGHT PHONE CALLS
We will start Monday night phone calls this coming Monday, SEPTEMBER 11th.
This means any student with less than a 60% in any class as of Monday morning will receive an automated phone call home on Monday evening communicating to a parent that the student is failing one or more classes.
If you receive this phone call, please do the following:
--Ask your child to show you his/her grades in Canvas.
--Look at the assignments with your child to see what your child is missing, or what your child may have performed poorly on.
--Set up a plan at home for when and where your child completes homework every day.
--Encourage your child to email or reach out to a teacher for extra help before or after school if needed.
--Many teachers allow retakes of assignments and assessments. Encourage your child to talk to a teacher about a retake.
--Encourage your child to reach out to our school counselor, Mrs. Dawson, in order to put together a game plan with her that will assist your child with improving grades.
--If you believe that you have received this phone call in error, encourage your child to email Ms. Powers so that the issue can be rectified.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MRS. HOLLANDSWORTH
My husband, Mark, is the Director of Bands and teaches music theory at Southwestern Michigan College. We have been married for nine years. My daughter, Anna, graduated from St. Joseph HS and is now a Senior at the University of Michigan in the STAMPS college of Art and Design. Last semester, she studied abroad at the London College of Fashion. We have a dog, Ali, and two cats Lily and Max.
I went to Plainwell High School and was active in Band, Choir, Art, Yearbook, the School Newspaper, and NHS.
I went to Western Michigan University twice. I hold Bachelor and a Masters degrees in Music Education.
I teach Fifth Grade Band at North, 6th and 7th/8th Bands at the Middle School, Jazz Band and HS (Marching/Concert) Band at the HS, and a Music Appreciation dual enrollment class through Lake Michigan College. I also assist with school musicals and do scheduling for the auditorium. Additionally, I am the Treasurer for the Michigan Competing Band Association and the Vice President of Adjudication for the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association, District 6.
I am proud to be a Panther because here in Watervliet, we have supportive staff members and students that are willing to work hard to accomplish their goals. This has been my second home for 26 years! I am extremely proud of the band program's growth and accomplishments over those many years. And it has been fun to have my former students' children go through the same band program.
People are sometimes surprised to hear that I am a pescetarian (vegetarian plus fish) and am very into cooking and gardening. My husband and I love to travel and venture off any chance we get. Last June, we took an awesome trip to Oahu, Hawaii. Also, I am an active musician and adjudicator - I sing in the group Chorllennium, play flute and percussion with the SMC Symphonic Band and Brass Band, and judge Solo & Ensemble festivals, Marching Band Festivals and Competitions, and Band & Orchestra Festival.

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP TIME
It is never too early for your senior to start completing scholarship applications. Each week, I will share in this newsletter all new and updated scholarships that we are aware of. They all have deadlines. The scholarships attached to this link each have a deadline in August or September. Sit down with your senior and go through these links. Identify which ones fit your senior. Some may not apply to your particular child's interests or qualifications. We will hold a scholarship night in January to provide more information regarding scholarships and what to expect. Many of these scholarship applications take only minutes to complete. Free money is always good. Free money adds up and can pay for the cost of books, tuition, housing, and other needed supplies.

ATTENTION ALL SENIORS!
Hello everyone,
Hope you all are having a nice start to the school year. I'm one of the new faces you'll be seeing in the building this year, and I just wanted to introduce myself:
Join my Google Classroom:
Everyone can join my Google Classroom by clicking here. The class code is efvyrpw. This is where I will post updates throughout the year, upcoming events, deadlines, useful resources, raffle giveaway results, etc. All seniors should join, but the page is open to everyone.
Why you should consider college:
There are many reasons you should consider pursuing education after high school, but here are some highlights:
- Lifetime earnings: people with an associate's degree earn 1.5 times more than people with just a high school diploma. For people with a bachelor's degree, it's nearly 2 times more. This adds up to millions of dollars over your lifetime.
- Job stability: People with some kind of college degree are less likely to be unemployed during their careers.
- Personal growth: 79% of college graduates said that "their college education was extremely or very useful when it came to helping them grow personally and intellectually" according to an October 2021 Pew Research Center survey.
- Overall health: College graduates tend to lead healthier lifestyles, and they live nearly 5 years longer on average compared to high school graduates.
What I can help you with:
As a College and Career adviser, I can help you with deciding what you are interested in after high school, questions about applying to certificate, 2-year, and 4-year degree programs, information about scholarships and financial aid, filling out applications, how to be successful in college, and more. I'll be working closely with the Senior class, but everyone is welcome to meet with me.
Why you should come meet with me:
I'll be rolling out an incentive program where if you meet with me and have thoughtful questions about college and careers, you'll be entered into a drawing for free swag and candy.
How you can get a hold of me:
You or your parents can reach me anytime via email at Christopher.Coburn@watervlietps.org with questions or to set up a meeting.
My role is split between Watervliet and Coloma High School, so I will be here half of the time (please see the attached schedule). On days that I'm here, I will normally be in the Media Center or the Library, so feel free to drop in.
Thank you, and let's have a good school year.

Why is College Important--Presentation for Spanish speaking families
My name is Anthony Perez, Assistant Director of Admissions at WMU. My primary role is focused on multicultural recruitment and outreach. One of the outreach events that I am looking to coordinate is an informational night that will be conducted in a community area that is accessible to Watervliet, Coloma, Hartford, and Bangor for their Spanish speaking families.
We are looking at hosting this event on September 25, 2023 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
at Coloma High School.
WMU will be paying to cater dinner – giving locally owned Mexican restaurants priority – and providing information on the college search and application process.
