What We're Reading--Book Chats by VPL Staff
"Did you hear about the little boy that they found in the woods behind the Crimstein house?" "The doctors say he's six to eight, but the kid doesn't remember anything before the woods- no name or birthday, even!" "Yeah, he's been playing with David Crimstein for 'a long time', and Hester says she's heard David talking; he said it was an imaginary friend, and she never checked!" "Guess he's been breaking into summer cottages and cabins and stealing food and supplies!" "Says he learned to talk from watching TV in the cabins!" "I heard he's staying with the Crimsteins until they find out who he is!"
Can you just imagine all of the talk in town? The curiosity, the questions, the search for answers? But the town never found out who he was. They called him Wilde, and placed him with a foster family, with whom he grew up.
Now, thirty years have passed, and a teenage girl has suddenly disappeared. Wilde's first friend, David, has been killed in a car accident, and Wilde is David's son Matthew's godfather. When Matthew comes to Wilde for help, the search for young Naomi begins to unravel a lifetime of secrets and scandal. Soon, everything will explode!
This book is the first in the 'Wilde' series; Two hearty thumbs up!!

I was recently home fighting a virus and decided to use the Libby App when I read through my two library books at home and sort of fell in love with the App! I utilized the "Available Now" feature & discovered how easy it is to read at night using the Libby App (well-lit for nighttime reading in bed,) it kept my place for me (I always lose my bookmarks...) and being able to use the "Define" feature for words my 40ish year-old brain could not remember was so nice. I was sold, to write the least, on those three features alone but then I found what is, quite possibly, one of the best books I've read in years: "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern! And this was her debut novel which impressed me even more! Her use of language to describe a world encased in magic and mystery floored me; it felt like I was inside of a beautiful dream where anything is possible. Not only did it enthrall like a fairytale, but it was also a love story that played out like a chess match. I was in love with the writing from page one!
With that, I highly recommend both the Libby App and "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. Happy reading, friends!

I've heard amazing things about author Colson Whitehead, and so far, he hasn't disappointed! I'm halfway through and can't wait to finish and read the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good crime/heist story! The characters are perfectly flawed, and you can't help but root for Ray Carney as he navigates blurred moral lines in Harlem. We have this book and its' sequel, 'Crook Manifesto', available at the library in regular type. You can also find this series in e-book form on Libby. Happy Reading!
