Educating Students in a COVID-19 Environment Update
Sarah Thornton, PSD Assistant Superintendent of Legal Services, provided an update on the current impact of COVID-19 in the district and more information on state requirements.
As of February 20, 2022, staff and student COVID-19 cases have significantly decreased from their peak in mid-January.
On February 17, 2022, Governor Inslee announced that indoor masking requirements will be lifted March 21, 2022, for schools, childcare facilities, grocery stores, gyms, retail, houses of worship, recreation centers, athletic venues, and other indoor establishments. The Washington Department of Health will release updated guidance for K-12 schools the week of March 6 to help schools prepare for the transition.

Dual Language Program Update
Carla Lobos, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, reviewed the district’s transition from late-exit bilingual programs to dual language programs, defined one-way and two-way dual language programs, highlighted the expansion plans of dual language within our district, and discussed next steps.
Currently, the district has implemented dual language through 2nd grade district-wide, with plans to implement dual language through 3rd grade next year. The district will also be providing administrators and staff with professional development training.

Long Term Facilities Management Plan: Implementation Refresh Bond Planning
Michelle Whitney, PSD Superintendent, provided an update on district staff’s continued bond planning progress. She presented a bond scope, three bond options, and timelines aligned with direction provided by the Board at the February 8 meeting.
Kevin Hebdon, PSD Executive Director of Fiscal Services, presented local bond and levy rate estimates based on the different bond options presented by Mrs. Whitney.
The focus was on accelerating the election, opening timelines, and increasing high school capacity. The Board was given direction to narrow the focus for district staff so staff can provide more detailed information at a future meeting. Discussion about bond planning will continue at the Study Session on March 8 starting at 4:30 pm.
