Letter from the President

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time." ~ John Lubbock

Dear Colleagues,

Now that spring break is behind us, we are in the homestretch before Summer welcomes us. Rather than worry about your Professional Development Plan (PDP - formerly PIP), this year I challenge you to forget about planning for next year and focus on renewing yourself. Design your personal Summer Improvement Plan (SIP).

What is an SIP, you ask? It is a time for you to reflect on what makes you happy. Just the little things that can be added to and then checked off of your summer bucket list. I use this term "bucket list" loosely. I don’t mean you have to go skydiving or eat scorpions, although both of these may be on your personal list. I am thinking more local and down to earth challenges like growing an herb garden. I personally have a brown thumb so this would truly be a challenge for me. Even trying to fit in something as simple as reading an adult book, just because you want to. Take a virtual cooking class. Try a new food you have never had before. Take a few day trips and visit New Jersey’s national parks or state parks. If you're looking for some inspiration check out these sites & blogs.

A big part of this work involves active engagement on one of our board committees such as Legislative, Programming, and Independent/Private/Parochial School representation.

If you are one or more of the following, we’d love to have you:

Energetic and not already overextended with other commitments.

Actively serve on one of our committees.

Advocate for our needs in the community and among your colleagues and peers.

Be always curious to learn more about the field of School Librarianship.
