Morris Memo
November 5, 2018 LWE Newsletter
Principal's Letter
Dear LWE Families,
This is such an exciting week for me! I have the honor of traveling to Washington, D.C. where I will get to participate in the National Blue Ribbon Award ceremony for all the schools receiving the award this year. I am looking forward to having time to collaborate with other school and district leaders from across the country. I will be sure to take pictures and share with our school community when I get back!
During the month of November, with our upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, we have an emphasized focus on being thankful. As a school community we have so many things for which to be thankful. I am so thankful for our amazing students, dedicated teachers and staff, and supportive parent community. I am also thankful that we are given the opportunity to be generous to others who are in need in our community. Our student council sponsored food drive for North Fulton Charities begins today! Please see more information in the newsletter below which highlights the specific needs they have at this time.
Have a wonderful week!
Warm Regards,
Julie Morris

Student Council and North Fulton Charities Thanksgiving Food Drive
It’s that time of the year where we are thankful for all we have and give to those in need! Student Council has partnered up with North Fulton Charities once again for their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive! Please bring in non-perishable food items to donate to the crates at the end of the hallways. The drive will start on Monday, November 5th and end the week of the 12th when NFC will pick up our crates. Some examples of food to bring in are: canned vegetables, boxed potatoes and rice, boxed pasta mixes, boxed stuffing mixes, bags of flour or cornmeal, boxes of baking goods, cans of gravy, cans of fruit. Please limit donations to specific items for a Thanksgiving meal! Thank you for any donations and let’s help families in our area have a happy Thanksgiving season!
A message from our school clinic
Borrowed Clothing
Kids from all grade levels during the school year come to the school clinic for a change of clothing. This is due to various reasons such as falling in mud, bathroom accidents, spilled milk or food in the cafeteria. When this happens, we are happy to loan out clothes as often as possible. We ask that the borrowed clothes are washed & returned to the clinic so we can continue to help the children throughout the school year.
You may want to have your child keep a change of clothes in their back pack or in the clinic if they frequently need a change of clothes or are in grade levels Pre-K through 1st grade.
There have been many clothing items borrowed from the clinic already this year that have not yet been returned. In order for us to help other children, please return any borrowed clothing to the clinic as soon as possible.
The clinic is always welcoming clothing donations. Currently the clinic needs young (sizes 5-8) boys pants and underwear.

VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION
All parents wanting to participate or visit classrooms must go through the volunteer registration process. Any person who has not gone through the training since June 2, 2018 must go through it again even if you did it last school year.
Applicants should be prepared to spend about 10—15 minutes for the training application process. In accordance with State Law, all volunteers must be current with Child Abuse Reporting Protocol Training BEFORE being allowed to volunteer in our schools.
It is very important that volunteers enter their full legal name as it appears on their government issued ID (please do not use nicknames or ‘goes by’ names on the application).
All applicants must wait 24 hours after applying for application processing and approval, before volunteering in our schools. When coming to the school to volunteer, you must bring your government issued photo ID to use when checking in at the front office.

Updated Procedure for Absence Approval in Extenuating Circumstances
Students should be present in school every day unless illness or other extenuating circumstances exist. The Georgia Board of Education lawfully excuses students for the following reasons: personal illness, death in the immediate family, religious holidays, and other educational days as pre-approved by the school principal. The principal has at his/her discretion according to Board Policy the option to approve a maximum of six (6) days per student per school year in extenuating circumstances. Parents/guardians must notify the principal of their request by completing the request form located on the school website at least two weeks prior to the absence. Submission of parental/guardian request does not grant automatic approval. A school administrator or designee will contact the parents/guardian upon the final decision. As in the past, absences for illness, death in the family or religious holidays can be approved by your child's teacher by sending in a signed note from you.
- The principal approval form is to be used for extenuating circumstances only, as stated in the information above.
- Two weeks ahead of the planned absence, print and complete the request form located on the Lake Windward website.
- One form is required per student.
- Submit the completed, signed, and dated form to the Lake Windward front office.
- Your student’s attendance record will be taken into consideration when reviewing your request.
- A copy of the decision to accept, decline or amend your request, will be sent to you and your child’s homeroom teacher.
Email requests will not be accepted.
