Mrs. R's News
(week of 2-22 part 2)
We rounded out the week with some cool things!
Below you can see our finished products for our World Travelers. Students did an excellent job looking for adaptations for humans visiting the areas they researched.
OOOOOPS!
With all of the excitement of Google Expeditions today, I forgot to hand out homework at the end of the day. It will be home Monday and due Friday - thanks for continuing to read each week to strengthen that skill!
WORLD TRAVELERS
African Savanna Group #1
This crew had a wonderful protective safari jacket that was very functional!
African Savanna Group #2
Students working in this group used green and brown for camouflage.
Sahara Desert Group #1
In the lower right you can see a pair of glasses with extra protection on the sides to keep sand out of the traveler's eyes.
Sahara Desert Group #2
This group had someone with some schema about the fruit that grows on cactus for obtaining food!
Pacific Patty
Students all explored the Pacific Ocean together and worked through it to prepare for their own traveler's area.
Amazon Rainforest Group #1
Because it's dark on the floor of the rainforest, the camouflage raincoat on this traveler is black.
Arctic Group #1
This group had an almost invisible white jacket for camouflage in the snow - can you spot it on their poster?
Amazon Rainforest Group #2
Sunscreen and bugspray will provide protection for this traveler.
Arctic Group #2
Ice fishing is a great way to get food!
Intro to Genius Hour
How did they do that?
We are going to start a Genius Hour in 4th quarter. This concept can look different when different people and schools implement it. For my class, we will start with a short time set apart once or twice a week. We will work on projects chosen by the students alone or in a pair or small group. Students initiate the projects by researching something they are interested in and following the design process to solve problems and create evidence of their learning. Once students have started a project, they will be allowed to work on them when they finish other work during the regular school day in addition to the time set aside for Genius Hour.
Today we ALL worked on the same project to walk through the steps of asking questions, researching, and giving a finished product, such as an experiment, an item to share, or a poster to show new knowledge.
Today we looked at a phone hologram projector. Below is a link to a do-it-yourself page!
Google Expeditions & Makerspace
-
At the end of the day today students who were 7 were able to get on Google Expeditions. Since students must be 7 to participate, younger students went to a different class for a makerspace experience. While I did not capture pictures of the students, below you can see a photo of the staff practicing and learning this morning.
During the expedition, students visited the White House, the Statue of Liberty, an ocean floor, the Congo, and a few more. It was so fun seeing and HEARING their reactions!!
