STEM Update
Living Things: Needs and Impacts
This module found Kindergartners investigating the needs of living things. During an outdoor walk, students looked for plants and animals and considered how their needs are met in their natural environment. Then, they explored how living things impact the natural environment. They participated in a simulation to observe how an animal impacts the natural environment to meet its needs. Students then explored human needs and wants and how humans impact the natural environment, both positively and negatively. In an exercise to reduce waste, students used the design process to build a new game or toy out of reusable materials.
Robotics and Automation
In this module, 5th graders are exploring the ways robots are used in today’s world and their impact on society and, especially, the environment. Students are learning about a variety of robotic components as they build and test mobile robots that may be controlled remotely. Students are tasked with designing a mobile robot that can remove hazardous materials from a disaster site. 5th graders are then challenged to design, model, and test a mobile robot that solves this design problem. At the NPSfI Annual BBQ/STEM Night, 5th graders will demonstrate the results of their final projects.
Energy: Collisions
In this physics and engineering centered module 5th graders explored the properties of mechanisms and how they change energy by transferring direction, speed, type of movement, and force. Students discovered a variety of ways potential energy can be stored and released as kinetic energy. They learned to explain the relationship between the speed of an object and the energy of that object, as well as predict the transfer of energy as a result of a collision between two objects. The design problem introduced kicked off by observing how amusement park bumper cars collide. As students solved the problem for this module, they applied their knowledge and skills to develop a vehicle restraint system. These designs were tested by determining if a eggs using student's restraint systems could survive controlled collisions.
