HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Happy New Year and welcome back from Winter Break! It is hard to believe that it is already January, and we have just completed first semester. Sometimes a vacation will disrupt our routine and leave us feeling a bit lost and confused. We all know that our students seem to be happier, more relaxed, and more attentive in class when they have a regular routine and get enough sleep. As we return from winter break, let’s take time to help our students restore their routines.
As we move into second semester, it is important to monitor your child’s attendance, academic progress, and your child’s routine. Re-establishing your child’s routine will not only help your child feel happier and healthier, it will also help your child begin the semester on a positive note.
Parent Tips for a Successful Spring Semester
- Help your student get organized.
- Review all class syllabi and know the expectations. Important class information is on your teachers’ websites.
- Come prepared with notebooks, school supplies, etc.
- Complete readings and homework assignments daily. Don’t get behind!
- Maintain good attendance.
- Review your contact information to make sure the school can communicate with you.
THANK YOU!!!

Internship Overview
An internship is an experience in which a high school student learns by taking on a responsible role as a worker in a company or organization and then reflects on what happened while in the workplace. The Internship Program is a supplement to formal classroom instruction. Its intent is to significantly add to the vitality of the instructional program and to impact the courses that a student has taken or will take. Internships are for juniors and seniors and must be at least 135 hours. Students will earn a credit (1 elective credit) for the internship. All WYWLA seniors must complete an internship by the end of their fall semester. Hours can be earned during the summer between their junior and senior year.
During the internship, students will be completing a workplace orientation and learning objectives, given to them by their internship supervisor. Throughout their internship, students will also be tracking and completing a minimum of 135 contact hours and completing 10 journal entries to document their experience. Supervisors are required to complete an evaluation of the student’s work, which will count for 30% of their grade. As part of the final exit project, student interns will create and give a presentation to review and reflect their internship experience.
If your business/organization is interested in supporting an internship or work-based learning experience, please contact the WYWLA Internship Coordinator, Meredith Mabe (mmabe@wcpss.net), or the WYWLA Career Development Counselor, Frank Reed (freed@wcpss.net).
