GRE Family Gazette
April 1, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break! I spent time with my kids and went on quite a few adventures. My favorite was our visit to the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton. We had an awesome time checking out the different planes and exhibits. Hopefully you had time to make some special memories with your families as well!
As we look forward to the final weeks of school, we will be launching something special come Monday. As our students arrive they will notice staff welcoming them back to "Race to the Finish". From Monday until the end of the school we will be challenging students to Race to the Finish by:
Giving my best effort on all I do
Being respectful, responsible and safe
Using kind words and taking care of each other
Making myself proud
In marathon running, the final 6.2 miles is said to be the most difficult. In part it's because you are so close to the finish line but can't yet see it. For those that cross the finish line successfully, whether they run, walk, crawl or are carried, it's an opportunity to look back at how hard you worked for that moment. Over these last few weeks, when it is most difficult to dig in and do the work, staff will be working with students to keep at it and Race to the Finish! More to come on this adventure in future newsletters but know that you can help support this work by having conversations at home that help keep our students focused on ending the year with a strong finish!
Here's to a great week full of fun, friends and learning!

A Few Important Reminders:
1. In a little over 1 week Big Walnut Local Schools will be hosting a screening of the documentary, Screenagers. This event will be held at BWMS on April 11th starting at 6:30 pm. This event is free and all are welcome! Screenagers is a documentary that focuses on the habits that children develop by using their mobile devices. Throughout the film, families are seen dealing with the consequences (often serious) related to excessive screen time or screen time without boundaries. The film focuses on the connection between mental health and how much tech time can impact a child’s development. This documentary also highlights the benefits of finding the balance of screen time and screen- free time and offers some solutions for parents. For a sneak peak of this film, click here. I hope to see you there!

2. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with Art Day! We had so much fun and the building was full of extreme excitement. A huge thank you to Mrs. Doran for putting the event together and to PTO for supporting this experience for our students!
3. Purple Up Big Walnut! April is the month of the military child. This year we will be honoring this day on Friday, April 12th. BW Apparel has the new design up and running on their website. I have attached the link below, the shirt sale ends on 4/3. Money raised from this sale helps us with events such as the fall and winter military appreciation nights. These are both great events to recognize those actively serving our country. Let's see that purple Big Walnut!

4. We are excited to share a change that will be happening to our music program at BWIS for the 2019-2020 school year. Currently, fifth grade students have the option to elect band, choir, or orchestra. In an effort to ensure all students are exposed to the music electives, all 5th grade students will have an exploratory music course that allows students to sample the three music electives - band, choir, and orchestra. This course will give students the opportunity to survey each of the three musical offerings and try a variety of instruments. It is our hope that by changing the structure of the music offerings in fifth grade, more students will be exposed to the possibilities and better prepared to make a good choice for their music elective in sixth grade.
