Billy Haley

The King of Rock n' Roll

Not only was he the king of rock, but also the inventor.

“I sat down one night and wrote the line rock, rock, rock everybody. I was going to use the word "stomp" -- like rock, rock, rock and them stomp, stomp, stomp. But that didn't fit. I went from one word to another and finally came up with "roll."”

Bill Haley quote

"Bill Haley: Rock Around the Clock – the world's first rock anthem"

"Rock Around the Clock" hit No. 1, a position it held for eight weeks on the Billboard charts."

(We're gonna) Rock Around the Clock

Since rock was the new thing of the 1940's it was hot. Every teen age rebelling their parents took pride in listening to something that they didn't approve of. BIlly had a couple of major hits before work around the clock came out. Never thought much of rock n’ roll before this. The song “Rock Around the clock” became known because of the movie “Blackboard jungle”. It was the opening song during the credits. The song hit number one on the billboards and stayed there for eight weeks. Within six months a trickle of Rock N’ Roll began to spread against artists. Elvis Presley emerged from them. The songs full title is “We’re gonna rock around the clock”. But usually is never referred to as that.

"Three taps on a snare-drum and an urgent count of ‘One two three o’clock, four o’clock rock’ usher in a song that would show the world rock ‘n’ roll’s time had come."

(We're gonna) Rock Around the Clock

One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock
Five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock rock
Nine, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock rock
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight

Put your glad rags on, join me, Hon
We'll have some fun when the clock strikes one
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
Wer're gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When the clock strikes two, three and four
If the band slows down we'll yell for more
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
We're gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When the chimes ring five, six, and seven
We'll be right in seventh heaven
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
We're gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When it's eight, nine, ten, eleven too
I'll be goin' strong and so will you
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
We're gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

When the clock strikes twelve, we'll cool off then
Start a'rockin' round the clock again
We're gonna rock around the clock tonight
We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight
We're gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

"Rock Around the Clock was more important because it was the first rock'n'roll record heard by millions of people worldwide."
