Good Article on Student Motivation
http://www.cultofpedagogy.com/student-motivation/
"When I ask teachers what their biggest struggles are, one issue comes up on a regular basis: student motivation. You are able to reach many of your students, but others are unreachable. No matter what you try, they have no interest in learning, no interest in doing quality work, and you are out of ideas". Jennifer Gonzalez, Middle School Teacher
Math Still Matters!
Below is an example from Mr. Tako's class where students are working on word problems and showing multiple ways to solve a problem. Even our youngest mathematicians are thinking about math and applying it to real world problems and showing their complex thinking.
BAL Videos on the BAL Website
We are excited to let you know about a new resource on our website. The Balanced Literacy Videos document is a one-stop shop for finding video examples of most of the components of Balanced Literacy for both K - 2 and 3 - 5. This playlist includes videos found to be helpful in our BAL 101 and 201 trainings, as well as some other videos. This is a live document which OUSD will be adding to. If you have any videos, or urls of videos that you think might be useful to other teachers, please let them know (julia.bennett@ousd.org)

Want to Attend Math Conference in SF? Let Chelsea know!
Learning Opportunity for Math Teacher Leaders
Teaching & Learning (T&L) has secured funding to invite each of our Elementary Math Teacher Leaders to a premier math conference, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) to be held in San Francisco this year, April 13-16.
The opportunity is available to all Elementary Math Teacher Leaders, with the following recommendations:
-
Principal approves the Professional Development opportunity
-
Teacher Leaders secure a sub, using T&L budget code, as soon as possible and no later than April 8, before registration is finalized
Teacher Leaders will have the following options:
-
Attend 1 day (Thursday or Friday), and T & L will pay for sub coverage
We believe this opportunity promises to support quality learning for all Math Teacher Leaders. Registration also includes a full year's membership in the NCTM.
As always, contact us with any questions.
Thank you,
The Elementary Math Team

Have you Met Ms. Sanchez's Challenge?
I've seen many of you taking her challenge seriously. Below Mr. Granda was caught playing a game of tag with his students. Ms. Schenker went head to head with several fifth graders on the basketball court and Mr. Alexander is regularly seen on the football field. It's not only fun, it's a great way to lessen your stress and work towards your own wellness goals.
Cell Phones- Review the New Policy with your Students
EFFECTIVE 3/14/16 ANY STUDENTS BRINGING A PHONE TO SCHOOL MUST HAVE A SIGNED PERMISSION SLIP AND TURN IT IN TO THE OFFICE EVERY MORNING.
Found it!
Ms Anderson- March 14-18
Jobs:
- Pick up clothes in lower and upper yards and hang in the auditorium
- Put all "little stuff" (lunches, books, headbands, scarves, hats) in the box next to the rack in the auditorium
- Extra - zip/button up sweaters and jackets
- More Extra - arrange by size (great for those looking for a "small jacket")
Even More Extra - create a "Labeled" tag(s) that demarks a section on the rack. If your team finds labeled clothes, they can hang them in the labeled area of the rack.
