The lord of the flies
The story behind it's struggle to come to power in schools
The Lord of the flies
This book is about how a young group of boys are left on a deserted island after crashing from a plane. At first it was all fun and games, but then people started becoming idle and paranoid. Eventually tribes were made and people started becoming hunted. A tribe tries to hunt down Ralph (the original leader) by burning the island. The fire attracts the attention of a naval ship. Then once all of the remaining boys get on the ship the mourn for how they killed their friends.
How it was challenged
It was challenged in the Dallas, Tx. Independent School District high school libraries (1974), Sully Buttes S.Dak. High School (1981), Owen, N.C. High school (1981), Marana, Ariz. High School (1983), Olney, Tex. Independent School District (1984), A committee of the Toronto, Canada Board of Education ruled June 23, 1988 recommended that it be removed, it was challenged in Iowa schools (1992), Bloomfield, N.Y. (2000) (William Golding). The reason it was challenged so much was because it implied that man is no more than animals, it had bad language, it referenced black people as, "niggers", it had vivid passages about sex, and statements defamatory to minorities, god, women and the disabled.
