Eighth Grade Transition to High School
This is an important and exciting time for your students and your family as your child prepares to transition from eighth grade to high school. With the retirement of Mrs. Watson, our counselors at WLMS are supporting your student(s) through the four components of academic/career and social/emotional within our counseling domains. Our counselors at WLMS are cross trained and have secondary experience to assist and support all students. The WLMS counseling team has coordinated plans for student course input with the AHS and SCHS counseling teams such as: high school counselor campus visits, student and counselor course input into Naviance (our course selection program), high school parent nights and student tours of the high schools. Our partnership with the high school counselors will ensure our students will have all the information needed to make mindful choices regarding high school course selections. Parents of current eighth grade students who have questions regarding the transition to high school may contact:
Ms. Vandenbrook jvanden@humbleisd.net
Mrs. Knoeller jknoell@humbleisd.net
Please bookmark this page, "2020 - 2021 School Year Course Planning Information" on our WLMS Counselor's Website for information regarding transitioning to high school. We are excited to create four year plans for high school with each of our eighth graders! Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jennifer Vandenbrook and Mrs. Jill Knoeller

Planning for the 2020 - 2021 School Year:
Advisement for the next year begins in early spring and extends over several months. Verification of courses selected is sent home to encourage communication. In the process of course registration, it is in the best interest of the student that course choices be carefully considered. Students requiring a change in instructional levels within a content area must have the case reviewed by committee members including a counselor, parent, and teacher.
Reviews for students in the Gifted and Talented program are conducted by the Building Selection Committee. All schedule change rules and considerations apply to students with disabilities who receive Special Education services. Any schedule change that adds or drops a special education course or changes modifications for a general education class must be approved by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee.
Course or class changes may be considered in the following circumstances:
- when the student is evaluated and needs to be placed in or out of a strategy class
- when a student’s performance indicates the need for a change in level
The class changes occur only at the end of the first three weeks, the end of the first six weeks, or at the end of the semester. These changes require the written permission of the parent or guardian. Special consideration for other course changes will be made on a case by case basis. Seat availability, the time of the change, the effect of the change on the student’s schedule, the basis for the request and other factors will be considered in these potential changes. Schedule changes will not be made solely to change the period the class is held or to change teachers.
