WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - April 24, 2021
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Families,
I hope everyone has enjoyed the week.
It's been yet another busy week here at FSA. As we approach the final month of the school year, I want to encourage everyone to pay attention to the Spring MAP Testing schedules for ES and MS students and families, as well as the HS Course Finals Schedule and AP Finals Schedule.
I'd like to thank Mrs. Agha and Ms. Oliver for organizing and executing FSA's first Mustang Talks Competition. This was a competition inspired from the idea of Ted Talks. I was honored to be asked to be one of the in-house judges for the event and the students absolutely impressed me away with their speeches. I highly encourage you all to watch the video of the event below. Congratulations to the winners of the event as well! It is a wonderful tradition to continue the Mustang Talk Competition at FSA and I look forward to the one for next year.
We have another packed newsletter for our families this week and I hope you all take the time to read about the great things that our students are doing and working on. They all continue to be an inspiration to me.
I would like to congratulate one of our wonderful alumni Shinjini Das for her most recent recognition as top 10 motioval speaker to watch by Yahoo Finance. See below.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
With gratitude,
Dr. Kenan Sener
Principal

IMPORTANT Reminders
Arrival and Dismissal Reminders
Thank you for your help to ensure our arrival and dismissal times run safely and smoothly. As a reminder, please do not get out of your car for arrival or dismissal. FSA faculty are always present to help your child with the car door and their belongings. Please make sure to continue moving in the carpool loop, not leaving space between cars. We kindly ask that you remain in your car during drop off and dismissal, have your child's car seat on the passenger side, and pull forward all the way down to the stop sign before stopping to help buckle your child in.
Carpool cards are required if you should need to pick up your student from the main office during the day. If you don't have your card then be ready to show your driver's permit, at checkout. If someone else is picking up your student please make sure and email authorization ahead of time to the attendance email.
This is to ensure the safety of all students
If your student has a Dr. appointment, please remember that Dr. excuses should be submitted to the attendance office no later than 3 days after the apt. Please make sure that any Dr. excuse is sent to our Attendance Office in a timely manner per the FSA Policy. Absences will only be adjusted on receipt of an approved note. For the full attendance policy as well as other FSA policies, please refer to the appropriate student/parent handbook.
Lastly, Please email any reasons for absence or tardies to attendance@fultonscienceacademy.org as well as your child's homeroom teacher. This helps the Attendance Office keep record of absences and tardies as well. This includes internet issues or traffic problems! Please keep in mind that this year- students can only be allowed up to 10 absences throughout the school year.

First Annual Mustang Talks - What 2020 Taught Me
On Wednesday, April 21st, FSA High School hosted its first annual MUSTANG TALK, our own spin on the famous TED Talks. In a time when we’ve lost connection with one another due to social distancing, we felt it more important than ever to give the students a way to connect. With a traditional TED Talk, you see one person engage a room full of people and create a connection. That personal connection is created through not just the message, but also the sentiment that’s attached to that message. For that reason, this year’s theme was “2020 taught me..” 2020 was certainly a year that changed us all.
The participating students showed immense courage, vulnerability, professionalism, and passion when they got up on the stage to speak. They blew everyone away with their talks. The students included all the elements you would hope to hear from a TED Talk, while also keeping their talks very personal to their own experiences. Everyone left feeling inspired, and the students learned a great deal about personal storytelling and public speaking.
Here is some feedback from our faculty and staff:
Dr. Sener: “What a fantastic event! I loved the Mustang Talks event and was very impressed by our students. Bravo! Truly amazing!”
Mrs. Griffis: “agree 100%- think this event will be here to stay!! loved it!”
Ms. Melton: “Such a beautiful event! Loved hearing the students be vulnerable and open. So so good! Can’t wait for the next one!”
Mrs. Beck: “It’s so passionate and raw. These kids are amazing.”
A group of guest and in-house judges objectively scored each student to determine the top three placements, but each student is truly a winner for all of the hard work put into the speeches. We are SO proud of every student, and we can’t wait to do this again next year!
TOP PLACEMENTS:
1st place ($300 cash prize): Fatima Safdar
2nd place ($200 cash prize): Akshay Maharaj
3rd place ($100 cash prize): Khalil Lindo
2nd year running for FSA in the NSPA Honor Roll
It is quite an honor for four FSA students to be inducted for the second consecutive year into the National Scholastic Press Association’s (NSPA) National Journalism Honor Roll 2021. This is a national recognition similar to National Honor Society (NHS), except it focuses on the discipline of journalism, be it broadcast, print, digital and photography.
Currently, the National Scholastic Press Association is comprised of more than 1,350 production/publication groups. This is a national community of student journalists and scholastic journalism advisers, so in fact the membership is in the upper thousands when accounting for individuals. For example, while FSA as a school is not a member, Mustang News Team (MNT) is a member along with its 16 member team. The purpose of NSPA is to “...advance journalism and media as a vital cultural force by connecting advisers, students and professionals through national events and competitions and by creating and curating content,” in the following ways:
enhance professional development.
define global standards and ethical practices.
inspire journalism and media students and the public.
establish criteria for journalism education that meet the needs of the profession.
make powerful tools and resources available and accessible.
celebrate and enhance the value of journalism.
MNT has been a member of NSPA since 2018 when the team was first formed. All MNT members are able to access resources on the NSPA site (http://studentpress.org/nspa) as well as enter competitions. However, to compete, the production (MNT) had to be, for broadcast programmes, “on air” for a minimum of two academic years before they could qualify.
To be eligible for nomination to the annual honor roll, member students would have to have served a minimum of four consecutive semesters on the member program (MNT).
Next year, with the class of 2022, FSA will have seven seniors who will be able to wear the coveted teal honor cord around their necks for graduation. These seniors will also be able to apply and compete nationally for scholarships towards college.
Rising Freshmen and Sophomores, if you think this is an honor to which you would like to aspire when it comes to building your college resume, adding to your graduation regalia, and exploring and practicing your journalism skills - consider joining MNT! Video editing for the show and for individual stories is a need for the production going forward. In the coming academic year, MNT will have eight seniors out of its current 16 member group. This means there will be a huge gap as these seniors will not be as involved as they are now since they will be engaged in college preparation. But they would love to share their knowledge and train you! Questions? Comments? Please reach out to Ms. Rebekah Johnson (rjohnson@fultonscienceacademy.org) , or Mrs. Rookmin Maharaj (rmaharaj@fultonscienceacademy.org).
To see the complete list of 2021 inductees nationally and by state/schools you can click here and scroll down to Georgia to find our FSA students.

The test is administered to approximately the top 250 student combined scorers on the AMC 10 and AIME. The top scoring AMC 12 participants (based on a combination of AMC 12 and AIME score) are invited to take the USAMO. The top scoring AMC 10 participants (based on a combination of AMC 10 and AIME score) are invited to take the USAJMO.
The USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO) are highly selective high school mathematics competitions held annually in the United States. Since its debut in 1972, it has served as the final round of the AMC series of contests. Qualifying for both exams is considered one of the most prestigious awards for high school students in the United States, with only about 250 students qualifying in the United States out of over 350,000 students competing.
