STANWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
FAMILY UPDATE FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 19, 2022
SHS VISION STATEMENT
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.
This week is our annual homecoming week. Here is information from our ASB about the week's activities:
To start off this Homecoming Season with some class Stanwood ASB has planned various events for the coming week. Beginning with a Spirit Week!
Monday will be Music Monday so grab your favorite band t-shirt or try and copy your favorite singer's style.
Tuesday grab a partner and dress up as your favorite celebrity icons from movies, TV shows, or red carpets for Dynamic Duo.
Wednesday we will be saying NO Cameras Please, as we dress up in PJ’s trying to blend in with the everyday people of Hollywood like we are hiding from the paparazzi.
Thursday we will be paying homage to the characters in Grease, by throwing on all the denim we own for Denim Day.
And to wrap things up this week we’ll have Spartan Out, where you’ll grab all the Spartan spirit gear you have and get ready for the big game! Home 7:00PM vs Mt. Vernon.
Homecoming Court voting is also LIVE! This year Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors will get to vote on two Monarchs each to represent them as high standing students dedicated in their spirit and values of SHS. Seniors will get four Monarchs. Ballots can be found in students' Emails. The Court will be announced Monday September 19th and be recognized at the Coronation / Spirit Assembly Friday September 23rd, as well as during the Parade and Homecoming Game Halftime Show.

REMINDER: VOLUNTEERING AT SHS
CALLING ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS!
Who wants to go back to high school for a couple days a year? We are gauging the interest for a parent volunteer group (no name yet) to be formed at the high school to support our students with positive engagement. This group would be like the Watchdogs groups that are formed at many of our elementary schools but is not exclusively for dads. We want everyone involved who wants to support our students and the hard-working staff at the high school. Our youth depend on us to lead by example! If you are interested, please e-mail your interest to join us for a short kick off meeting (time and date TBD) to tedmccammant@gmail.com by Monday, October 3rd.
REMINDER: YEARBOOK INFORMATION
So that we can make our yearbook ordering more accurate, yearbook sales will end Monday, January 28th, 2023. YEARBOOKS WILL NOT BE SOLD AFTER THAT DATE. Please keep your receipt to ensure that you can pick up your book at the end of the school year. The cost for all students is $50.00 through September 30th, 2022. October 1st-January 31st, 2023 the cost will be $70.00 each.
Senior photos will be due Friday, October 7th, 2022. Please schedule your photo shoot with a photographer as early in the summer as possible. Photographers and studios are very busy in the Fall. Guidelines for photo submission will be available in early in September on the high school's website.
Grad ads for seniors will be due Friday, October 21st, 2022. Instructions for the grad ads and submission guidelines will be available in early in September on the high school website.

Family Communication
September 16, 2022
This week we welcomed our youngest learners back to school! Our preschool program is up and running at Stanwood Elementary School, and the students couldn’t be more excited to learn, play, paint, and grow.
While at Port Susan Middle School this week, I observed students and staff taking note of the “Knight’s Code.” The staff developed this code to create schoolwide expectations and experiences for students; it was great to see students and staff making and keeping common agreements.
Thank you, families, for everything you have done to prepare your students for school this year. Students are arriving ready to learn, eager to grow, and engaged in learning daily. We look forward to partnering with you for the remainder of the school year.
Class Size and Strategic Plan
As we head into our third full week of school, we continue to monitor enrollment and class sizes. Our District Strategic Plan prioritizes small class sizes (Goal #1: Foundational Early Learning for Every Student), particularly in grades K-3. We know that keeping smaller class sizes at K-3 is the best practice. Based on current class sizes, we are adding the following classes:
• One Kindergarten class at Cedarhome
• One third grade class at Cedarhome
• One 1/2 split at Utsalady
Monitoring enrollment at all grade levels throughout the fourth day of school is a common practice; and triggers additional staffing (or reductions). This allows us to allocate resources responsibly to all schools and keep to our District Promise: All students in the Stanwood-Camano School District will be empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and prepared for the future of their choice.
Hispanic Heritage Month
From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions, and cultural diversity of Hispanic/Latino/Latinx Americans whose heritage is rooted in 20 Latin American countries and territories. Learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month HERE.
Employee Recognition Program
Please let us know about the extraordinary work our staff is doing! Nominations are now open for the 2022-23 Employee Recognition Program. Use the link below to nominate an SCSD staff member for Classified or Certificated Employee of the Month. Heritage Bank is a proud sponsor of the employee recognition program in partnership with Stanwood and Camano-Island area businesses. The nomination form is HERE.
Regular Board Meeting Sept. 20
The School Board will hold its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Board Room at the district office. Agendas are posted before the meeting HERE, and Board Briefing meeting summaries are available HERE.
