SRI Testing- Do not Interrupt Mr. Miller
Teachers should prepare for SRI just like you do for all instruction and make sure you are ready and students have their passwords, etc. BEFORE the moment you start testing.
If something is not working, have the student do something else and test them later.
Mr. Miller cannot address individual testing issues while he is in the middle of instruction.

Praise Publicly, Re-direct Privately: Supporting Students with Trauma
According to Unlocking the Door to Learning: Trauma-Informed Classrooms & Transformational Schools, some studies state that as many as 1/2-2/3 students will experience some form of trauma. Trauma not only impacts brain development, but it may cause some students to develop sensory processing difficulties, making it significantly harder to learn in the classroom.
In addition to a child's ability to learn, what may look like misbehavior or defiance, may actually be a response rooted in trauma. Because the child is having a traumatic response, yelling at or reprimanding students may unintentionally reinforce trauma. This is why Rick Hansen suggests focusing heavily on praising the students or as he writes, “Nurture the hell out of these children. Capture those moments when the student is doing really well and point it out to build his or her self-worth: “Wow, I love how you sat at your desk for a whole five minutes” or, “Thank you for helping your classmate.” When you need to re-direct the behavior, do so privately and in as calm a voice as possible."
Please check out the following links to read more about trauma in the classroom:

Also, on Sept. 14th, Kathy Bennett, a Behavioral Health Program Manager, will do a PD focused on trauma in the classroom.

Amazing Volunteer Offers of Help for ALL Teachers!
We are SOOOO lucky to have tremendous parent volunteer support at Glenview!
3rd Grade Parent Rabiya Tuma has offered to help ANY teacher level books. She will pick them up from your classroom, take them home, and return them to you leveled!
Email her- Rabiya Tuma <rabiya.tuma@gmail.com>
Do you need help with getting your technology to work? Or need something hung up in your classroom?
Parent Brian Letson is our new "Howard Kong" and our handyman. He is coming by every day to help teachers with technology glitches, hang up hooks, screens, whiteboards, etc.
Email him with your needs: Brian Letson <bletson@yahoo.com>
Do you need help with a handyman item?
The screen needs to be put up the book shelf needs to be put together?
Parent Tom Baldwin is available in the mornings to help you with your minor handyman requests- tcb.baldwin@gmail.com
Do you want help inventorying your FOSS kits or prepping for your FOSS experiments?
Laura Prival is one of the district science coordinators AND a Glenview parent. She and another parent want to help you by taking the FOSS burdens off your plate! Please note that classroom teachers are still responsible for the delivery of science curriculum. Do not ask parents to teach your FOSS curriculum. They can help you teach, but you are in charge of the curriculum. Science is a core content.
Email Laura Prival for help with inventory or prepping: Laura Prival <laura.prival@ousd.org>
Yard Reminders
Every teacher needs a bin for their lunches where their class can put their lunch boxes.
If you need a bin, I've found some extras around the school- just ask me!
Daily Counts- Day 20
Count the students in your class on Day 15, 20.
Every child in the district is counted at the beginning of the year to confirm that the numbers we have in the data system match the numbers in our classrooms. The superintendent reports these numbers to the state and this determines our funding allocation for the year.
1. Do not count absent students, unless they have a verified absence (like you know the child is not coming to school the first week because he/she is out of town)
2. Do not count children who have never come to school or do not have a verified absence.
3. Write you count on your whiteboard by 10:15 (recess time) so that your instruction does not have to be interrupted.
Lost Items- Keep Your Eyes Open!
Ms. Lewis- a container (large bin) that had lots of construction paper 18 x 24 in multiple colors. Additionally, in that container, I would have put large bulletin board poster paper and the remaining teachers' portraits made by students last year. I had packed up new, unopened construction paper but it did not come with my other materials.
Ms. Sadiqa -boxes of supplies and books
Mr. Litt (missing RW curriculum)
Ms. Walton- (Missing RW curriculum)
Ms. Zika- Primary Phonics workbooks and readers it- not sure of what else might be filling it. I am continuing to check the school, but solar to no avail.

Room Parents
If a parent approaches you and indicates that Jennifer has asked them to volunteer, this is because Jennifer didn't know that you had already chosen a room parent. Please email her Jennifer Linderman <origami.mami08@gmail.com> so she can update her roster.
Assume positive intent! Some teacher have had a hard time in the past recruiting a room parent and PTA's outreach is here to help.
If you have more than one parent interested in being your room parent, put them to work! One parent can be your communications parent, another can be the field trip chaperone recruiter, another can be the party planner, another can be your book leveler, another can put homework packets together, another can help by coming in to clean your room once a month, another could help you put up a Donor's choose grant request, etc.
We are too under-resourced as a system and have too many students with needs to ever turn away or turn off our parents who are asking to help us.
