Meet the 2023/2024 Teachers and Supervisor of the Year and RISE Award Recipient
Sheila McFadden - Stigall Primary School Teacher of the Year
How many years have you been a teacher?
I have been a teacher for a total of 25 years.
What grades have you taught?
I have taught music education, preschool, pre-kindergarten, and second grade. I have also been a long-term substitute teacher for first, third, fourth, and fifth grades.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
What I enjoy most about teaching is forming relationships with some amazing children. The saying “They won’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” is true. After you have created an environment where your scholars feel safe and loved then they are ready to learn. I also like being silly with them. We do a lot of singing and dancing in our classroom. I love being creative so I can pretty much make up a song on the spot for just about anything.
Tonyaki Fenner - East Elementary School Teacher of the Year
How many years have you been a teacher?
I have officially been teaching for 10 years.
What grades have you taught? I have taught Pre-K, Kindergarten, 4th grade, 6th grade, and (7th grade-12th grade-DCS school).
What do you enjoy most about teaching? I enjoyed coming to school every day and engaging with all the scholars I encounter. Every scholar is unique and different. The thing that I like most about teaching is my students. I love interacting with them and love learning from them. Also, I love helping them understand the content of the courses that I teach (Math/Science). Last, but not least, I love when they see the connection between what they are learning and their lives.
Kelly Vonner - HJHSH Teacher of the Year
How many years have you been a teacher? 18 years
