Our Mission: “To share the Good News of Jesus Christ, teach children, and assist parents in training children to be witnessing Christians and productive citizens.”
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
For the month of November our students will be learning about Patience!
Fruit of the Spirit-Patience
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful…”
-1 Corinthians 13:4-5
These are among the most famous words from the Scripture, and maybe among the most misunderstood. This is part of a passage that’s often read at weddings, even though this isn’t about the kind of love that husbands and wives have for each other. Rather than dispelling myths about the passage about love, let’s focus on the way love is described here: it is patient.
Patience is a virtue that supplements love. To exercise patience toward another person is to love that person, which is why being patient and loving is sometimes hard. I mean, have you met people? Sometimes, we can be unlovable, and sometimes we really push the limits of the most patient saint. How often do you consider what you’re doing and where you’re going so important that you become annoyed when the traffic is moving too slowly or your appointment time at the doctor came and went or the sermon has run too long or…or…or.
Thanks be to God that He is not like that toward us. He is patient and kind. St. Peter writes, “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (II Peter 3:8-9). God patiently waits for us to turn from our sins—to turn from our impatient insisting on our own way—in order that we would reach repentance and live.
Dear saints, let us look to the example of our Savior, who patiently calls us away from our sins back to the way of life. Learn from Jesus Himself that patience, so that as your patience is tried and tested, that you would grow in this godly virtue and show that same patience that God has lavished upon you to those whom God has placed around you.
Let us pray: O God, by the patience endurance of Your only-begotten Son, You beat down the pride of the old enemy. Help us to treasure rightly in our hearts what our Lord has borne for our sakes that, after His example, we may bear with patience those thing that are adverse to us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
