Otsego High School
Weekly Newsletter (Semester II, Q3, Week of March 14th)
From the Desk of Mr. O'Shea
Thanks to all our students especially our Seniors who participated in winter activities. We had a very successful winter. We were highlighted by the local media for our technology and use of the 3D printer and Makerspace. We celebrated two District basketball teams, had our first 1,000 point scorer on the girls team. Had several District wrestlers, one state wrestler, a state/national cheer team, and state dance team. We also had several individual State qualifying indoor track athletes, several State FFA degree recipients, and individuals in our music program honored at the District and State levels. The HS increased its 4 year graduation rate from a "C" 88.5% in 2010, to an "A" 97.8%. Our 5 year graduation rate went from an 88.9% "C" to a 96.7% "A." Finally, we had a former graduate awarded the Medal of Honor by the President of the United States.
I say this not to brag or gloat. I know that we are not perfect by any means and we have a lot of work to do. Rather, I mention these accomplishments to say thank you to our students for their hard work and dedication, our staff for their commitment and dedication to excellence, our parents and community for your support and involvement. I am so proud of the students in this building and the of the people in this community and I am looking forward to the exciting things to come and finishing out this year strong. #GoKnights
- We will be on a Two Hour Delay Schedule Wednesday March 16th for staff professional development. Everything form buss pick up to the start of the day will be pushed back 2 hours. We will still end the day at 2:20pm.
- Good luck to the Choirs and Bands performing at the OMEA competitions this Friday.
- HS Musical Tickets are now on sale to the public (10am-2pm, (parent volunteered), $12 for adults and $10 for Children and Seniors.
- OGT make-ups will be the next week. This only applies to Juniors and Seniors that have not passed them yet. Freshmen and Sophomores no longer take the OGT tests. They will be taking the New State Assessments at the end of April into early May (see schedule below).
Spring State Testing Schedule/Information
The classes of 2018 and beyond are no longer required to take the Ohio Graduation Test, (OGT) but rather, will need to take 7 different end of course exams throughout their high school career. Students must earn a cumulative score of 18 points, using seven end-of course state tests over four years of high school. Different criteria can be used for students who go to Penta, but here is the basic information you need at this point:
7 End of Course Exams:
9th Grade – English I
10th Grade – English II
8th or 9th Grade - Algebra I
9th or 10th Grade - Geometry
9th or 10th Grade – Biology or *Physical Science
10th Grade - U.S. History
11th and 12th Grade - U.S. Government
Each test uses a 5 point scale
Level 5: Exceeded expectations
Level 4: Met expectations
Level 3: Approached expectations
Level 2: Partially met expectations
Level 1: Did not yet meet expectations
*Level 3 or higher is the target
* Physical Science test is not taken as of 2016. Only Biology.
Critical Information:
- Students must accumulate a total of 18 points on the 7 exams by the end of their senior year to graduate.
- They must have a combined minimum score of 4 points between the English I and English II tests.
- They must have a combined minimum score of 4 points between the Algebra I and Geometry tests.
- They must have a combined minimum score of 6 points between the Biology, US History, and US Government tests.
- THESE REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
11th and 12th Grade Parents
If you are a parent of an 11th or 12th grader, your child is required to pass the five Ohio Graduation Tests (Reading, Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies) given to them their sophomore year. Although most everyone has passed these tests, there are a few that will be making them up this spring to meet the requirement. They will continue to take the tests they have not passed, in the spring, summer, and fall until they pass. We have a very short list of students in this category but we are working with them to ensure all students meet the requirement.
Furthermore, all 11th and 12th grade students will be taking the new U.S. Government test. This test will NOT count towards their graduation but does show on our district report card and will affect our final grade from the state. It is critical that these students take the test seriously and try their best. I would appreciate any help you can give in assisting us with this. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office or email me. Thank you for your time.
This year we have come up with a schedule that allows us to administer the state tests without losing any instructional time. Let me repeat that. NO INSTRUCTIONAL TIME WILL BE LOST TO TEST STUDENTS. In order to achieve this we will be running two block schedules over a 4 week period of time. Orange Day (Periods 1,2,3,4) and Black Day (Period 5,6/7,8,9). On these days classes will be 90 minutes long and students will test during their actual class periods. See images below.
Testing Dates:
English Testing: Week of April 11th
Math Testing: Week of April 18th
Social Studies Testing: Week of April 25th
Science Testing: Week of May 2nd (Schedule TBD)

JH & HS STUDENT COUNCIL AND THE OTSEGO CLOTHING CLOSET
Otsego Junior High School and High School Student Councils are working with the Otsego Clothing Closet to collect clothing for our community members. Otsego Clothing Closet is a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Ohio that provides clothing at no charge to families in need within the Otsego school district. They are currently in need of clothing donations of new and gently used clothing for all ages and sizes. Specifically, they are running low on clothing for JH and HS aged students.
Our Student Councils are excited to help collect donations, as we would like to help stock the Clothing Closet as well as opening The Knight’s Armory as a sister program to the Otsego Clothing Closet. The Knight’s Armory will be located in the high school for students in need to privately pick up clothing at no cost. We will be dividing all items donated between the Knight’s Armory and the Otsego Clothing Closet.
We will be accepting donations during the week of March 12th through 18th during the school day as well as at the musical each evening. You are welcome to drop off your donations at any time. Please leave donations in the main office of the High School, or see our Student Council members at the donation boxes at the opening of the musical each evening. Thank you for your continued support and your donations!
Student Council Armory
HS Student Council will be collecting items, so we can open our Armory next year. Students in need will be able to "shop" the Armory, and take items at no charge. Please help us stock our shelves so we can give back to our community! Please click on the link for more information regarding the Otsego Student Council Armory

To continue towards our $130,000 goal we are raffling off a package of our very own Thomas Family Cattle Farm beef. The package includes a variety of steaks, roasts and ground beef (between 25-28 pounds -- a value of approximately $250). This package nearly fits into a typical recyclable grocery bag and if you win and don’t have room for all of the beef we’ll be happy to bring it to you in smaller increments. Tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. The winning ticket will be drawn on Tuesday, March 29th.
