Leader in Me Theme for October- Seek First to Understand
The theme for October is empathy. We will work on building conflict-resolution skills and strengthening our ability to listen to others. Leah Wipperfurth, School Counselor, will teach Guidance lessons on this topic and the classroom teachers will be teaching weekly lessons from the Leader in Me curriculum. The goal is for students and staff to understand that conflict is normal so we all have to develop skills to resolve conflict respectfully. We teach the students it's okay to disagree, to become angry or frustrated. It is all about how you manage your body and your emotions during a conflict that will take practice. One effective strategy students use is "I messages". A graphic is included below for you to use "I messages" at home.
In addition, the students will learn that bullying is never okay at school or in the community. We teach students to recognize bullying, and what to do if they are a victim or a bystander. Students learn that bullying includes an imbalance of power and is repeated over time. Please reach out to me or a member of our Pupil Services team with questions or concerns.

BRIDGE Room at Franklin
What is "The Bridge Room"?
BRIDGE Stands for:
Breathe
Reflect
Internalize
De-escalate
Grow
Exit
The Bridge Room is a physical space where learners can refresh, reflect, and reset in order to be able to return to their classroom ready to actively participate in their learning. It is meant to be a short-term alternative environment for a child who is not ready to learn, but is not exhibiting dangerous behaviors. All Franklin students can access the Bridge Room when they need to through their teacher.
Ms. Jamie Szymanski is the Bridge Room Coordinator. Ms. Szymanski will be giving students breaks, helping them reflect on challenges, and assisting them to be ready to return to their classrooms ready to learn. She also assists with student arrival and lunch and recess.
If you have any questions about the Bridge Room, please feel free to reach out to anyone on the Pupil Services Team or Ms. White for more information.
Accelerated Reader Takes Off at Franklin
Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.
Teachers and librarians help your child choose books at an appropriate readability level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that your child can pass the quiz and experience success.
