KTS Newsletter
Term 4, Week 7, Tuesday 29 November 2022
Coming up...
A big KTS welcome to Angela, who started in Room 1 this week.
It was a week of highs and lows. It was disappointing for those students who had trained for their athletics zones to miss out due to the wild weather – this impacted both the intermediate and year 4, 5 & 6 teams. It was exciting to learn about our success in the Art in the Hood – huge congratulations to our finalists, to our Kohia winners who will have their artwork on our local bus stop and to Sora (Rm 9) for taking out the overall prize. See below for pictures of their winning pieces. It was thrilling to watch our cultural dance groups and Kapa Haka perform on the stage at the Albert-Eden Schools Cultural Festival, they all did us proud. It was sad to say goodbye to our pre-service university teachers who left us on Friday. We wish them well in their future careers.
We have another busy week coming up; students are all rehearsing for their performances on International Night, this Thursday 1 December. Our year 4s are enjoying their Arts trip today at Te Uru in Waitakere (see picture, right); their overnight sleepover will take place at school on Friday. The intermediates will be learning about career possibilities on their Success Pathway day on Wednesday – we are looking forward to welcoming members of the community who will be talking about their chosen lines of work.
Keep checking the calendar as we head to the end of the year and enjoy the celebrations that the last few weeks will bring.
– Catherine

Eden-Albert Cultural Festival
You can imagine the relief when Saturday morning began with rain-free skies. Kapa Haka finally managed to get onto the big stage! Starting the performance with a haka, delivered with passion, certainly got everyone’s attention! Throughout the set, every performer put their very best effort into showing just how well they have come together as a team this year. The piupiu swayed, poi flew and voices floated out across the crowds as they performed their five favourite waiata. Confidently sharing their gift with the audience, Kapa Haka represented KTS with pride. To Kapa Haka; We are so incredibly proud of you all. Your performance was outstanding! Can’t wait for International Night so you can stun everyone again with your talent. Mrs Hewlett and Ms Chebbi think you are awesome!
With time for a costume change the junior Indian dance group then took to the stage and delighted the audience with their performance. They were all smiles and gracefulness – once again we were so proud. Many thanks to Ida (an ex-student) who has been coming from EGGS to teach this group once a week; Ida you have been such an amazing role model to our young dancers.
Our final performance was by the Sri Lankan group, a small group full of energy and vigour. Their vivid face paint enhanced their amazing expressions as they covered the whole space of the stage. Nethuli (Y8) has taught this group – another fantastic role model who has given back to younger students within the school. We appreciate this so much Nethuli.
Art in the Hood
The organisers of Art in the Hood said: We were so overwhelmed with the calibre of entries from the students and it was so hard to pick winners. However our judges have now deliberated and here are this year’s Art in the Hood winners from Kohia Terrace – we are so excited that they will be displayed on a bus shelter near your school. Furthermore, Sora has been picked as our overall 2022 programme winner – another winning piece from KTS, how exciting!
Finalists: Annie, Arianna, Hiyara (R6), Emilie, Alissa (R7), Nadia (R12), Alisha, Anna, Zoelle (R8), Hazel (R12) and Jemima (R11)
Kohia Terrace School Winners: Abby (R6), Alex (R8), Sora (R9), Yash and Harsh (R14)
