Presentations - April 8, 2019

At the Board of Education meeting on April 8, 2019, there were several presentations and updates that we want to share with the community.

Athletic Director, Mr. Frank Bifulco, shared the highlights of the Winter Sports Season, as we welcomed and celebrated the athletes.

Mr. Peter Mercurio, Principal at Washington School, gave a presentation about the initiatives happening at our 5th grade school. He spoke about the Leadership program, Leader in Me, that is built into all of the programming at Washington School, a pilot of student-led teacher conferences, and the infusion of technology. One example is a yearlong writing class with author Jarett Lerner, via an interactive Jamboard. The students also read the book “Refugee” and wrote letters to their representatives as a result of what they learned in the book. Congressman Tom Malinowski will be coming to Washington School on Earth Day, to talk to the students about all they have learned, and what they can do to make change.

Mr. Errol Brudner, from Stonegate Associaties, LLC, shared a summary of the results of their recent audit of the school district’s security and emergency management systems. Top takeaway is that Millburn has great security protocols in place, especially compared to other districts. He also presented recommendations for options to enhance safety. The Board of Ed is reviewing those recommendations, and looking at ways to implement them.

Superintendent's Report

Dr. Burton's weekly report on recent and upcoming events and accomplishments:

Art Show Thank you to Staff and Students

There were amazing displays of artistic and creative talents in March. We had the Youth Art Month show of all K-12 student artwork around the Ed Center that provided an opportunity for the community to share in all of the artwork throughout the month. Many thanks to all of the student artists and the Art Department for all of their efforts to create an outstanding display.

International Festival

I want to also thank the HS World Language Department for the International Festival that happened last Friday evening. There were students sharing a variety of talents, cultures, and food samples that represented our school community. This was an amazing opportunity to showcase the work of the HS World Language Department and to celebrate our cultural diversity in Millburn.

Middle School Musical, The Addams Family

The Millburn Middle School Spring Musical was held this past weekend to packed houses each night. I attended on Friday night to an amazing show. The singing, dancing and theatrical performances left you asking, “these are Middle School students?” A special thanks to Mark Oppel, Dominick Pisa, and the entire MS Musical cast for a fantastic musical season.

Odyssey of the Mind

The Odyssey of the Mind teams around the district have been incredibly successful in their recent competitions. 11 Millburn Odyssey of the Mind teams went to the State Competition on Saturday, and now there are 3 Glenwood Teams, 2 Washington School Teams and 1 Middle School Team who are moving onto the World Finals at Michigan State University in May. Congratulations!

Ed Foundation Film Fest

The Education Foundation’s annual MILLBURN FILM FEST will be held on Friday, April 26th at 7:30 pm at the HS Auditorium. (Red carpet opens at 7:00). The Education Foundation is putting students in the spotlight again this year and will be showcasing the winning films.
