Outdoor Play in the Winter optimizes Learning
With us heading into a week of cold weather, children get "cabin fever" and need some outside time for their optimum learning. We may provide an opportunity for children to go outside after several days of indoor recess. We will double check to ensure children are well dressed to play outside for no more than 10 minutes, and an alternative indoor play in the gym will also be provided should some children choose to stay in, or if they do not have adequate outdoor wear. Thank you for talking with your child to encourage them to play outside when the opportunity exists. When buses are not running, recesses will remain indoors.
Please ensure your child comes to school wearing the following: snow pants, warm jacket, warm boots, toque, mitts and scarf/tube. Even on not-so-cold days, having the proper winter gear ensures children enjoy their free time in the fresh air.

Checkpoints in Learning
Thank you again for your patience as we worked through the technology glitches on PowerSchool to view your child's progress reports. They were made available on February 6th and are still available for view. Please log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal to access them. Please contact the school if you require assistance viewing your child's report.
Evidence of Learning Portfolios will be going home again in March and we will be holding another session of 3-Way Conferences on March 13th & 14th. We are super excited because OLA will also be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of 3-Way Conferences in March.
Should you wish to discuss your child’s progress before then, you may call the office to arrange an appointment with their teacher, or send them an email. Email addresses for all teaching staff are available here.
Round 1: Day 2 of OLA's Power Options
Power Options - Calling on Facilitators of Learning
Round one of Power Options was a huge success. Thank you to our teachers and support staff, along with Sam LeDrew, Chantal Cadeau and Mitzi Jeddry for offering workshops for kids. The children adored the Science Experiments, Braiding and Cross Training workshops!
Round 2 Planning has begun!
We are looking for parents to offer OLA children a workshop to help them explore deeper growing and experience learning from the expertise of our parent community. Workshops can be linked to any of the Alberta Education Competencies (see below). The options workshops would be held on the early dismissal Wednesday in March (March 6) from 1-2pm and the repeated workshop again on April 3 from 1-2pm.
At OLA we do all we can to ensure learning success. Parent involvement in children's learning is a another positive factor to successful learning!
Come and join the fun!
Please email Mme Gravelle at pamgr@eics.ab.ca
with your workshop idea before February 22, 2019.
Alberta Education & EICS Surveys
There will be two surveys coming your way, and your voice matters to help guide OLA's future.
The first comes from Alberta Education and is called the Alberta Education Accountability Pillar Survey. Thank you for completing this survey when it comes to you. For more information about this survey, please click here.
A second survey directly from Elk Island Catholic Schools called The Assurance Survey gathers information to ensure OLA's progress is in alignment with our collaboratively created Assurance Plans, celebrates elements that are in alignment, and helps us as an OLA community to realign where needed, and thus guiding OLA's future direction.
When these surveys arrive in the mail or in your email inbox, thank you in advance for completing them. Your voice matters to help guide OLA's future!

Tech Time: Google Tools for Your Child
How to use Google tools to support your EICS student
Did you know your child, as an EICS student, has access to G Suite for Education? These tools allow students to access, share, and create knowledge that supports their learning. On February 28th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at our new EICS Central Learning Services please come to learn what Google for Education tools your child has access to and explore how to use those tools to support them at home. This session is for all learners, whether you are a beginner or have experience with technology.
There are limited spaces so please register here or go to http://bit.ly/EICSGoogleTools
Please bring your child's EICS login information (if you don't know how to access this please ask your child or your child's teacher). If the login information is not available we will have alternative logins so everyone can participate.
