Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones Jr. Named Nation's Top Superintendent!
At the National Conference for AASA, The School Superintendents Association, earlier this month in Los Angeles, Superintendent Dr. Curtis L. Jones Jr. was named the National Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Jones was one of four national finalists after being named the state winner in December.
“We recognize that leaders matter, and this designation and this event bring that home," he said.
Dr. Jones has been Bibb County's superintendent since April 2015. Under his leadership, the District has seen graduation rates increase to 78.5 percent, and schools across the District have seen gains in the College and Career Ready Performance Index. The District also currently benefits from more than 200 partnerships with community businesses, which has helped lead to initiatives like "Leader in Me."
"“Dr. Curtis Jones is an excellent educator and he’s a man of great integrity,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “He has made real strides in Bibb County and exemplifies the work going on in Georgia to prepare students for life. I’m grateful he’s a Georgia educator and I’m proud to call him a friend.”

Burdell-Hunt Magnet Hosts Leadership Day
Feb. 15 was "Leadership Day" at Burdell-Hunt Magnet School, and that meant the students got a chance to show off how they're applying "Leader in Me" principles in their school. This includes their clubs and groups, all of which find a way to give back to their school or their community.
"These are activities self-selected by students that they wanted to participate in to give them exposure," said Principal Tanya Allen. "We know that in the greater community, we have to share."
This included coloring club, cosmetology, building club and more. Students also led tours of the school, and showed off their Technology Competition projects to visitors from the community and even other schools. Parents also volunteered to help the Spanish Club feed visitors tacos and other dishes.

MLK Elementary Recognizes Millionaire Readers
Love for reading was in the air at Bernd Elementary on Valentine's Day, as students got to pick out five books to keep. Media specialist Melanie Wheeler said that the giveaway was a good way for students to choose some books that pique their interest to read over and over.
"They're able to have choices, and they're able to read something that they like," she said.
The Book 'Em event was made possible by a partnership with Bibb County Sheriff's Office, Community Foundation of Central Georgia and Powers Law Group. Lieutenant Tim James said that the giveaway offered an opportunity to connect with the community.
"One thing, it's a very positive contact with law enforcement," he said. "Sheriff (David) Davis is definitely all about young people; education is very important."

Community Volunteers Become 'Principal for a Day'
Earlier this month, community members visited schools across the District to serve as "Principal for a Day." These individuals visited classrooms, sat in on meetings and toured the schools with regular principals. Brittany Middleton, director of group sales for Macon Bacon, visited Skyview Elementary, where she attended as a child.
"It's been really cool to come back and see some of my old teachers," she said. "I did not realize what being a teacher and being a principal really entails."
Beyond seeing what work is involved in schools, guests got a first-hand look at the way our students learn. Vineville Academy of the Arts Kristy Graham was proud to show off how even the youngest of learners are getting ready for college and career options.
"I think it gives a broader spectrum for the community and the workforce to see how we're preparing the kids for the future through the arts," Graham said.
We'd like to thank all our volunteers for the day, including representatives from the Business Education Partnership, Trina's Treats, Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex, GEICO, Georgia College, Forest Hills United Methodist Church, Steward Chapel AME Church, Coliseum Medical Centers, The Shoppes at River Crossing, Department of Family and Childrens Services, Community Foundation of Central Georgia, MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union, Next Level Community Development Center, Saint Luke Baptist Macon, Jones Cork, LLP, Community Partnership, BGA Enterprises, LLC, CenterState Bank, Georgia Power, Burger King, US Postal Service, Lundy Chapel Baptist Church, Chapel Hill Church of Christ , Macon, GA, Sheridan Construction, Vineville United Methodist Church, World Changers Church Macon Georgia, Untouchable Hands", Macon Magazine, Campus Clubs, Inc. and more!
