Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 6/21/2016
A Message from the Leadership Team
Thank you summer instructors and staff for an amazingly smooth first week of class. We welcomed a summer record of over 600 students. It was great to see the excitement of the first week of class among both our students and instructors. As I visited classrooms I had great fun getting to know your students while engaging them in short conversation.
As we continue with the remaining six weeks of class we ask instructors to focus on four things:
1. Provide students meaningful language rich conversation and dialog focused around a structured theme
2. Continue to share Scott Schnappauf's brief video on Education, Careers and Jobs (this is an excellent intro to your Tuesday morning and a great opportunity to discuss opportunities)
3. Take attendance through Focus
4. Communicate any discrepancies with Focus and attendance to your site coordinators as all students should now be situated

Best Practices
Break your content up into smaller chunks to help avoid cognitive overload. Avoid using extended lecture, and opt for student centered learning. You may want to consider designing smaller mini lesson that allow for focused practice and student utilization.

Everyone Loves a Good Mystery
Short Story Writing Contest
Mystery and suspense stories can be great motivators to get students excited about reading and writing! A good mystery can provide a launching point for a rich discussion on charters, story structure, central themes, clues, distractions and predictions on “who done it”.
We invite you to share with your students a wonderful opportunity to express their creativity and maybe win a prize in the process!
Check out our suggested readings and sample lesson plans.
