The Tunnel
A low whimper reverberated through the tunnels. An object traced my spine through my hoodie. I spun around, but saw nothing. Partly because of the darkness, and because there was nothing there.
I moved to the left to hug the wall. Maybe not the smartest move, but nothing could sneak up behind me. I rolled up my sleeves, and continued on.
All the time I hugged the wall, afraid of what might lurk in the darkness. My foot hit something on the ground. I pulled back and gripped my fists tight. And that’s when it sprang out of the shadows.
Red
Everything was crimson. Scarlet carpet, cherry red banisters, mahogany tables. Even residue of ruby- colored knight uniforms. The carnage was gruesome, and the castle was in tatters.
I shuddered at the thought of all the dead soldiers, and that beast that did this. It made me feel even worse that it might not have been a dragon.... The king from the West land was ruthless. He surely did this... but it just seemed too reckless, too maniacal. Whatever did this caused the fate of an entire kingdom. Is it possible that the very king I paid taxes to.... did this?
The Future
Machines whirred, and bots hummed all around me. The feeling of loneliness was hollowing me out. Soon to join would be nostalgia.
I wished I could go back, but I knew my mission. I had to save the present time, but my time machine had an error in the circuitry, and I was launched into the future.
I clenched my multi- tool between my teeth, and got to work. I flipped my hair over my shoulder, and dug my hand into a mess of wires.
“Need some help, lady?” I spun around, and that is when my world fell apart.

Book and Movie Review by Jeremy, Chance, and Aiden
Book: The Wild Robot
Hello, my name is Jeremy and I love to read! I am currently reading a book called, A Wild Robot. A Wild Robot is a book about a robot of course! The book starts with a ship that is carrying a bunch of robots in boxes. This ship unfortunately hits a rock and breaks down. Five boxes of robots survive the crash. The other boxes of robots safely float to a nearby island. However, four of the boxes hit the side of the island violently. They all crash with the robots inside and only one robot survives. This last robot safely rides up along the sand of the island. A couple minutes later, some animals see that they have something new on their island. They go to investigate. Once they get there, they open the box. Packing peanuts fill the inside of the box. They play around with the packing peanuts and they play with enough that something metal appears. One of the animal’s tails accidentally slaps a button on the robot in the box and, it slowly turns on! I am ending this review on this book here, so you can go finish it.

Book: Dragon Masters Series
Book: Dragon Masters
My name is Chance and this month I am reviewing the book titled Dragon Masters. This book is a fantasy fiction book, so it is make believe. This book is about a young boy who is ordinary. There is a king who takes the young boy from his mom for some reason. When he got into the king’s castle, he saw a caged dragon that almost burned him to ashes. He could not believe his eyes because he had never seen a dragon before! When he went deeper into the castle, he heard other dragon sounds. When he was so deep in the castle he could hardly see sunlight. When he was walking he saw a person with a pointy hat and in a blue cloak. When the person saw him he said “Nice to meet you.” Also ,he seemed like he was a wizard but that didn’t seem possible because wizards are not real. There was a door, and somehow he opened the door with his finger. Then, inside that room was a big crystal. He gave the boy the crystal and said that he was now a dragon master. A dragon master is a person who can control a dragon. The dragon that he picked was the Earth Dragon. An Earth Dragon can teleport and can lift rocks with its mind. The dragon master named the Earth Dragon Worm. Worm actually looks like a big large worm with a head. I would keep on going but I want you to read the rest.
Book: Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone
Book: Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone
One of my favorite books of all time is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Oops, I forgot to introduce myself, my name is Aiden and I am the the book critic for the Mustang Messenger. This book is one of my all time favorites because it is all about fantasy, which is my favorite genre. Let me give you a summary about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry is a regular boy, so he thinks but he does not know, that he is a famous wizard! He is very famous because he survived a spell. Harry kept receiving letters from Hogwarts, which is a school for wizards. This was making Harry’s uncle angry. Eventually, Harry goes to Hogwarts. When he is there, he is afraid of being part of the Slytherin group. He ends up joining the Gryffindor group instead. He makes friends with Ron and Hermione while being part of the Gryffindor group. Their group has classes together where they learn spells, potions, and secrets. One secret they hear about is the Sorcerer’s Stone. This stone was hidden under a Cerberus, which is a dog with three heads! This dog was protecting a trap door that leads to a room with a bunch of challenges. All three friends win the challenges behind the trapped door. They find even more doors with even more challenges that they must conquer to get to the end. It seems every time they complete a challenge, one friend stays in a room. Harry eventually gets to the end and finds the stone. He also learns that one of the teachers at Hogwarts is a villain. That is the end of the review, hopefully you will see the movie!

Staff Spotlight by Allie, Gloria, and Tamia
Mrs. Boyle
This month, for Staff Spotlight, we are shining the light on Mrs. Jane Boyle. Our very own Music teacher is the musical director of our school’s musical, Annie. Mrs. Boyle has worked long and hard for this musical. She also did a musical last year called Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. There was a reason that Mrs. Boyle chose this musical. This year is Annie’s 40th anniversary on Broadway. We have six seventh graders, Alyssa, Maddie, Jade, Hanna, Emily, and Anna, that are also helping out with the musical. They did it last year and wanted to be a part of this year’s too. We have Mrs. Kelly, the director and Mrs. Kuehn, the choreographer. There are forty-two actors/actresses and ten stage crew members. So in all, we have sixty-one people working on this musical. The dates for Annie are February 16th and 17th, a Friday and Saturday. We hope we see you there!

PLAYOFF TIME!
The NFL teams are battling again to go to the Super Bowl. On Sunday, January 14, the Pittsburgh Steelers faced the Jacksonville Jaguars.
On the other side of the AFC, the Tennessee Titans played against the New England Patriots the day before. We were really hoping that the Titans could beat the Patriots. However, The Steelers lost against the Patriots by a call that everyone in Pittsburgh didn’t agree with. The Patriots defeated the Titans…...neither game went how we had hoped. The weather in both games was the coldest the Jaguars had ever played in for this season.
We were hopeful that the weather would help us to win, but it didn’t. So, the Patriots beat the Titans and the Jaguars beat the Steelers! The AFC championship will be the Patriots vs Jaguars.
Pittsburgh Pirates Offseason
So far, in the Pittsburgh Pirates offseason, they have traded Andrew McCutchen to the San Francisco Giants. Gerrit Cole was also traded to the Houston Astros. This was a sad day for many Pirate fans in Pittsburgh. After hearing of this sad news ,Josh Harrison is now wanting to be traded too. At this point, the Pittsburgh Pirates are falling apart. In the next season, the Pittsburgh Pirates will only have a couple of great people. Starling Marte is the best player on the Pirates now. Hopefully this trade will pay off, and we can get a few great players in return.
Pittsburgh Penguins
For this season we have been playing good, even though we lost a couple of players. We are hoping we can get a three-peat by winning 3 Stanley Cup Championships in a row. Last year we beat Nashville in the championship. The year before that we beat San Diego in the championship. We still have our best 2 players Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Right now we are 25-20-3 and are 5th in the Metropolitan Division. We are hoping they can make the playoffs and win the Stanley Cup Championship.
January Art Feature
Featured Student Artist: All of sixth grade by Madelyn and Madilyn
This month we based our project off of Native American Sand Painting.
Here’s a little bit on the Native American Sand Paintings. Tribal leaders would create these sand paintings to heal people and help them to get better when they were sick, especially in the Navajo tribe. The Navajos used crushed stone, pollen, and other natural items native to the desert. Native Americans regard art as an element of life that brings people together.
We agree!
