Instruction

Teachers spend 20% of their day on behavior management. So, in a 7 1/2 hour day you spend 1 1/2 hours on discipline...that's crazy to me! Gain back some of that time by making your lessons do the work. When students enter your class, get them focused by using a bellringer/anticipatory set/opening, etc. so that you don't have to spend so much time telling students to "sit down", "be quiet", "get to work", "pay attention". For more on this, read Chapter 3 of Engaging Students With Poverty in Mind.

On Monday I presented the BOE with our 3 Principal's building goals.

  • Maintain chronic absenteeism below 10%
  • Increase student engagement to 95%
  • Increase student use of technology to 25%

Curriculum

As we come to the end of the 1st 9 weeks are you where you need to be in the curriculum? I expect you to move through the curriculum at a smooth, steady pace. If students don't get the intended curriculum from you when they're supposed to, when will the students ever be exposed to those missing parts?

Assessment

AIMSWeb + has some very enticing components that AIMSWeb 2.0 lacks. I've asked the leadership team to begin having conversations with their teams about your thoughts on us as a school transitioning to AIMSWeb +. There is nothing set in stone but I don't think any of us are in love with 2.0. The most difficult challenge would be that it's the educational cliche that we don't stick to anything for very long. Below are some links to information regarding AIMSWeb +. Please take some time to peruse these and give some feedback to a leadership team member.

I still think Sullivan has the best staff...ever! You are passionate about kids, you are always willing to put in extra time and effort, and you put up with my quirks. I am so thankful for your continued support of me as your Principal. I am always looking for ways I can improve and appreciate your advice. Again, thank you for being the best staff a Principal could ask for!!
