A Message from Mr. Finkle
Since this is my last communication with you for this year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students and their families a wonderful holiday, a restful winter recess, and a Happy and Healthy New Year! Be safe if you are traveling!
The PSAT results were distributed this afternoon. Please review the results with your child. Additional information is posted below with helpful links. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's Guidance Counselor or Assistant Principal.
It's hard to believe that the second marking period is almost halfway done. Quarter 2 Interim Grades will be posted on the Parent Portal tomorrow, Friday, December 14th.
The DHS Choir/Band Concert will take place on Tuesday, December 18th at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center. It should be a wonderful evening of excellent musicianship and very entertaining. Fa-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la!
When we return on Wednesday, January 2nd, we will turn the calendar and immediately begin to think about the 2019-2020 school year. On Wednesday, January 16th, we will host our annual AP/College Accelerated Program(CAP) Information Evening. The presentation will be from 6:00 to 7:15pm and will be in a new and exciting format. The administration and supervisors will give a general overview of our AP Program and our CAP Program. We will then answer any questions that you have about AP, CAP and the differences! Previous attendees have raved about the evening and gave them much more insight into the courses we offer here at DHS. You will then have time to review AP materials and to speak with our AP students who are in the courses.
Our annual scheduling meeting with the students will be held on Thursday, January 17th, where the high school administration and supervisors will highlight new courses and answer questions about scheduling courses for next year. The process is the same and we will be using the Schedule Waiver Form with a hard deadline of February 28, 2019. The 2019-2020 Program of Studies booklet and the Schedule Waiver Form will be available on our web site shortly. Stay tuned.....................
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at dfinkle@delranschools.org or (856) 461-6100 x3005.

Beginning January 2, 2019, students that lose or forget their student identification card can utilize a breakfast/lunch charge ticket up to three times only. After the third charge, students will have to get a new Student ID at a cost of $5.00. If a student does not have money to pay for a new identification card, an obligation of $5.00 will be assigned to the student until the fee is paid. Robotics
The Bionic Bears have been met three times a week for many weeks now, and will soon step up their meeting sessions, as the competitions grow closer. There is enough student interest and enough robot parts that we are able to field TWO teams for the VEX "Turning Point" competition this year. The first competition event will be held on February 2, 2019, in Millville, NJ. The students have made progress in creating a practice field set-up, learning to write code that gets a robot to take action, and in designing and building a new base and new arm for the new challenges. We still have lots of work to do before and after the holidays. Good luck Bionic Bears!
DHS Science Fair
The DHS Science Fair is slated for Tuesday, February 19th and preparations have begun. This is not the only fair your student can compete in! The regional competition, the Coriell Science Fair will be hosted on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the Camden County Community College Campus in Blackwood. Click here to register your project for this fair, which includes college scholarships and cash prizes for winners. The last day to register your project and submit completed forms and research plan for Coriell is Friday, February 22nd. For more information, please contact the DHS Science Fair Coordinator, Kim Brewster at kbrewster@delranschools.org.
Delran Innovation & Fabrication Lab Kick Off Event
For updates, go to the Delran School’s Website in STEM. Or, click on the embedded links to see a timelapse of the evening and read the article from the Courier Post online.
On Friday, November 30th, the Delran STEM Ecosystem Alliance in partnership with the Delran Township Board of Education kicked off the establishment of the district’s future Delran Innovation and Fabrication Laboratory (Fabrication Laboratory) with a groundbreaking ceremony at Delran High School in front of a crowd of 150.
Renovations are currently in the works to transform what used to be the school’s automotive shop into the future site of Delran’s Fabrication Laboratory. Construction work is set to begin in December and is expected to be completed by Fall 2019. The refurbished site will feature laser cutters, 3-D printers, woodworking equipment and other tools for hands-on learning that teaches students important technological skills.
The district launched the event to share their STEM cradle to career vision while introducing the plans for the Fabrication Laboratory to members of the community and state. Among the attendees were Commissioner of Education, Dr. Lamont O. Repollet; Senator, Troy Singleton (7th District); Assemblywoman, Carol Murphy (7th District); Chair of the Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee Assemblyman, Andrew Zwicker (16th District); and Philanthropist Laura Overdeck.
Intended to become a central hub of STEM learning in Burlington County, the Fabrication Laboratory will provide STEM-rich experiences for Delran students, Kindergarten through High School, and include some of the most state-of-the-art, hands-on digital fabrication learning tools available. “Innovative classrooms like this Fabrication Laboratory provide teachers with the tools to excite students about STEM concepts and support the development of critical STEM skills to prepare today’s students for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Dr. Lamont O. Repollet, New Jersey Commissioner of Education. “I congratulate the Delran STEM Ecosystem and school district for its success in securing this asset to further the education of Burlington County students.”
The Fabrication Laboratory will also provide opportunities for partnerships with higher education institutions. Currently, the Alliance is working closely with Rowan College at Burlington County to expand and enhance dual-enrollment credit opportunities for students and provide a pathway to enter various engineering programs with advanced standing.
The creation of the Fabrication Laboratory is an initiative led by the Delran STEM Ecosystem Alliance, a cross-sector partnership, launched in 2017 that seeks to provide provides all learners access to high-quality STEM education and work opportunities. The Delran STEM Ecosystem Alliance is one of four designated STEM ecosystems across New Jersey, the others being: Liberty STEM Alliance, Newark STEAM Coalition, and South Jersey STEM & Innovation Partnership. These ecosystems are part of a national community of practice of 58 STEM learning ecosystems selected by the STEM Funders Network. The New Jersey STEM Pathways Network, chaired by Philanthropist Laura Overdeck, and managed by the Research and Development Council of New Jersey.

World Language Department News
The holidays are a magical time for children around the world and Delran is no exception. The World Language Department is taking this time to infuse culture into their lessons with holiday traditions from German, French and Spanish speaking countries.
In the Spanish classes, students shared food and stories about a departed loved one to celebrate El Día de Los Muertos as a class. Each student created a virtual altar dedicated to a loved one who had passed. Altars typically include a favorite food item of the person who passed. Students prepared and brought in favorite food items of their loved one and as a class we shared food and stories about our departed family members.
The French classes will be celebrating these next few weeks by creating fake string lights to represent the Festival of Lights in Lyon. French classes will also be caroling at the end of December. This is a tradition the students seem to really enjoy.
An annual German custom has students making gingerbread houses to give as a treat to faculty members, while learning hymns and writing letters to St. Nikolas. Students will also visit the German Christmas Village in Philadelphia to learn about where most of our holiday activities originated from. (The pickle legend is NOT from Germany.) Let’s hope that Krampus doesn’t need to stop at any of their homes this season.
Amidst all these festives, the teachers in the World Language Department would like to wish everyone Feliz Navidad, Fröhliche Weihnachten, and Joyeux Noël!
