Our thoughts are with our fellow students' family and countrymen as they are assessing the damages that Hurricane Matthew left behind. The MRHS family is your family.
Students Model School Theme "You Are Important"
Ashleigh Tolley: Ashleigh Tolley who saw a student quite upset after the assembly and went over to comfort her without being asked to do so. Ashleigh stayed with the student for a few minutes and continued to stay with her as they left the auditorium.
Machenzie Cardillo: Kudos to Mackenzie Cardillo who was spied giving appropriate & comforting support to a fellow classmate-in-distress as she escorted the classmate to the School Nurse. It was wonderful to see the care one student offered another demonstrating yet again; "You Are Important." Well done Mackenzie!
Owen & David Van Sickel: Owen & David exemplified generosity, good citizenship and good sportsmanship through volunteering their time at the Cape Cod National Golf Club to assist the Nauset Girl's golf team. According to a letter of thanks by Ms. Kathy Robinson, "None of these young men were offered pay, and they gave up 6 hours on one of the hottest days of summer to support the game of golf and the Nauset girl's team. They are good kids, they are great golfers, and they are unselfish citizens."
Chris Herren Delivers a Powerful Message to MRHS Family
I was thoroughly impressed with Chris Herren's message this week. It was powerful, from the heart, and resonated with most, if not all of the MRHS family. It was my first experience hearing Chris speak and I appreciated how he gave specific examples of students who he had reached. I believe this sent a message of hope to our students. He clearly made a case for it to be cool not to drink and do drugs that hit home with many of our students.
A teacher shared with me how she witnessed one of our students staying behind to offer support to a fellow student she did not know. I followed up with this student personally and commended her for making another student feel important. I sat with several students at lunch who were emotional, but glad they had the chance to hear Chris. The message from our students was one of unity, togetherness and focus on doing the right thing. Many informed me that their parents had spoken to them. I encourage all parents/guardians to take the time and debrief with your child.
The MRHS faculty & Staff will continue to support our students. We are a family at MRHS and our goal is to make sure each child under our care is made to feel important. I want to thank Jan McGrory for all her hard work in making this happen, Angie Chilaka for all she does for our students and staff, our guidance & counseling team for their support, and to all of you for supporting this important message and for being there for our wonderful students. We will continue to keep this dialogue going throughout the school year.
thank you,
Bill Burkhead
9th Annual Special Olympics Hosted by MRHS!
A special thank you to our local Harwich and Chatham Police and Fire departments. All participants were treated to donated, and cooked giant hamburgers by the HFD and both police departments were represented with our very own Sgt. Bill Masse and MRHS SRO Tom Clarke. Thank you all for making this such a special tradition here at MRHS- enjoy the pictures!
Shark shout out to Ms. Freitas' Culinary Arts classes that helped make 130 pops for the Special Olympic athletes this week and also for collaborating with Mr. Cataldo's class learning to shuck (and eat!) oysters- fresh from Wellfleet! Ms. Freitas
The MRHS Guidance and Counseling Department is offering the PSAT for any student in grades 8 through 11.
Attention grade 8 through 11 parents:
The PSAT serves as an important springboard to preparing for the SAT. Research has shown that the more times a student takes the PSAT, the better they score on the SAT. Also, the PSAT serves as a National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Exam.
Grades 8 & 9 will test on October 12th and Grades 10 & 11 test on October 19th. The cost to register for the exam is $17.00 and checks can be made payable to: MRHS.
Please contact your child's guidance counselor for additional information.
Why are enzymes substrate-specific? Ask one of the Honors Biology students! This week, students modeled the stages of protein folding. Next week? Experiments with enzyme-mediated reactions!
Shark "Shout Outs" (SSO's) - MRHS's way of Appreciating the Great People here!
Shark Shout Out to custodian John Larson! The DY football team needed a favor this weekend, asking us to use our game field. We obliged, and Mr. Larson happened to be working in the building. He welcomed the officials and both teams and assisted them. He did not expect this, as he was busy with other work, but he did it with a smile and it was very much appreciated by both teams, the officials and our administration. Its acts like this that give our wonderful school such a positive image- thank you Mr. Larson!
Shark Shout Out to Mr. Steinruck - we had a damaged fence that he fixed up in no time so that homecoming events could go on as planned and our beautiful grounds would look good.
Shark Shout Out to Mr. Demers - one of the most popular staff members in our school. There is nothing he won't do to help and it does not go unnoticed- thanks Dave!

Important Message:
My name is Laura Morris and I teach 3rd grade at HES. I am writing to share an important event with you. This Saturday morning, the Route 124 overpass of Route 6 will be dedicated to fallen World War II pilot U.S. Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade Ralph Wallace Burns. Lieutenant Ralph Wallace Burns is the father of my stepfather, Ralph “Skip” Burns, a Harwich High School Science teacher and track coach for nearly 30 years. Skip passed away a year and a half ago, but will be with us in spirit as we honor his father. I share this event with you so you might pass the word to your students and other friends that might have known Skip. This meant a great deal to my dad, and we are so pleased that Rob Mador of the Bridges for the Fallen organization, along with so many other community members, have helped to make this happen. It also is important to note that our very own Monomoy Regional High School teacher Richard Houston, who worked for many years alongside Skip, and became a close friend, will also speak. Please follow the link below to learn more about this special day.
Thanks
Laura Morris
"You Are Important" & A New Tradition at MRHS! Great to see all the staff in game white jerseys!
The football program would like to start a new tradition as part of Homecoming AND to go along with our school philosophy "You Are Important". Basically it's this, one of our players may approach you and ask you wear his white game jersey for the day on Friday as the team will be wearing their new blue home jerseys. The kids are deciding who they wish to wear their jersey based on the impact YOU have made in their lives. I hope you can honor their request and take great pride in knowing that YOU have made a difference in their live. You can wear their jersey throughout the day in school and at the Pep Rally, where i hope to get several pictures. Thanks for all you do for the school and our program.
My best,
Coach Demanche
